Now I feel satisfied I've had enough time with this colossus to tease out just the tracks that both thrilled me as a viewer, and have also been top choices for good theme development, best orchestration, etc.

When this set landed like a stick of historical retrospective dynamite smack-dab-in-the-middle of what remains the best Commercial Orchestral Score Re-release year of all time (THE BLACK HOLE, ST: TMP, BEN-HUR, and more.), I knew it would take years to really digest the sheer amount of invention, and to gauge how successfully the sound engineers--of yesterday and 2012--really captured it.

First off, Chris Malone with his skillful and unobtrusive noise-killing, has lifted the lid off many, if not most, of these tracks. It makes a world's worth of difference to the playful stuff with the solo muted trumpet, xylophone and woodwinds on Gerald Fried's "Sympathetic Magic" from CATSPAW, itself a candidate for this S.B.T. title.

Keep all the noise shaping in mind when you choose, and let's try to treat this mass of STAR TREK:TOS scores like the entire STAX records or DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHONE catalogue. The absurdity of the pursuit will make all the justifications for S.B.T. that much more desperately fun than a rational context. Choose and defend!

I'm only going to get started on deliberating what single track to stamp an arbitrary and meaningless appellation like S.B.T. on. We all know there is no single best track in reality; all the more fun trying to come up with one!

My first Light Bulb Moment: what about "Fesarius/Fesarius Approaches" from THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER? That one's top-ten in terms of thematic quality and balls-to-the-wall brass! Hmmm.

My vote for SBT goes to Confrontation from Sol Kaplan's The Enemy Within. Just awesome music and tracked into other episodes. I listen to it often.

I might have to agree with this...

Soon after this set came out I made a 40 min play list in iTunes of what I thought were the prime cuts. I feel these can be contenders for S.B.T. ;

Monster Illusion (The Cage)

Ruth (Shore Leave)

Down the Throat (Friday's Child)

Arrows (Friday's Child)

Zap the Spaceship (Charlie X)

Confrontation (Enemy Within)

Ancient Combat (Amok Time)

Vina's Dance (The Cage)

Situation Grave (Where No Man has Gone Before)

You Loved Me (Metamorphosis)

Apollo's Storm (Who Mourns for Adonais)

More Soup (Amok Time)

Mace Fight (Catspaw)

Ruk Protect (What are Little Girls Made of?)

Fesarius Approaches (Corbomite Maneuver)

Violent Shakes (Doomsday Machine)

Kirk Does it again (Doomsday Machine)

Such a difficult question.

I am very fond of The Big Go, but there are so many, many excellent tracks from the series that it is really difficult to choose.

Yes, so many good pieces of music. But I guess I would have to go with Ancient Combat from Amok Time. Heck, even my wife, who doesn't listen to soundtracks and isn't much of a Star Trek fan, can quickly pin down this piece of music. It's not necessarily my favorite but it's the first thing that starts running through my head.

Not sure, but it's almost certainly something by Sol Kaplan.

Come on, there's WAY too much to pick a single best track.

If you made me, I'd have to say it's the Season Two opening title.

If you wanted to veer away from the main titles, surely one of the strongest contenders is the Kirk versus Spock fight music of "Amok Time".

But then maybe you want to veer away from what's old hat and concentrate one what's new.

Well, I really liked the extended Romulan Theme on "Balance Of Terror". And the "jeopardy" theme from "Elaan Of Troyious". And the Fesarius music from "The Corbomite Maneuver".

And then I come back to this: Single best? Forget it, there isn't one. Not a permanent one anyway. Every single best is just the single best for a moment and then a new moment comes along.

I will say this: I think my favourite *DISC* in the set is the one with "Charlie X" and co.

Cheers

Agree near impossible. But doomsday machine. Best of that is light beams/tractor beam. Close is Kirk does it again and what is a doomsday machine/planet killer. The immortal Sol Kaplan.

Captains Wig Naked Time Alexander Courage, Romulan Theme Fred Steiner , and Edith's Fate/Edith Must Die Fred Steiner. So many good cues. So hard to choose.

Yes. Very strong contender for THE best, both dramatically and musically.

I'm really digging this thread... the TOS Complete S.C. is a monster set to dig into! While I've made my own "best of" playlists covering all three seasons it's great to hear everyone else's thoughts.

It's a tough call, but my single best track across all the discs would be "Kirk's Philosophy" from Return To Tomorrow.

Ironically, George Duning may have outdone them all with his graceful gravitas, though I give the edge to "Sargon Inert" from that same episode. A "stellar" track.

Gerald Fried's "Down the Throat" from FRIDAY'S CHILD just might be the perfect combination of exciting listenability and dramatic punch. I love it!

I will say this: I think my favourite *DISC* in the set is the one with "Charlie X" and co.

Ding ding ding!

But here’s a stab:

Beyond the Pale from Where No Man Has Gone Before
Hideous Balok from Corbomite Maneuver
Zap Sam (Season 2 library), Goodbye Charlie / Finale from Charlie X
Ruk (any Ruk) from What Are Little Girls Made Of?
Help Me from Enemy Within
Voice Test from Conscience of the King. Also Quasi-Sex.
Edith Falls from City on the Edge of Forever
Impension from Season 1 Library
Captain’s Log from Friday’s Child
Nancy Sobs (Library) from Metamorphosis
Mr. Spock / Marriage Counseling from Amok Time
Almost all of Courage’s season 2 library cues.

Almost two years on and I’m still just not a season 3 fan.
