For British moviegoers, there was a third one - Carry On Columbus (which actually outgrossed the Ridley Scott movie in the UK!).

I will defend 1492, as it is so sumptuously visual, it is amazingly gorgeous, but granting that I am not really sure what it is all about. But with the visuals and the score, I often do not really care about the story that much. With a proper bluray 1492 would be a great experience.

The Salkinds' version has a young Catherine Zeta Jones in it. I guess putting her on the cover with Mr. Correface, or alongside the Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria, wasn't deemed enough to make a DVD sufficiently marketable to sell in the place (Region?) Columbus purportedly discovered.
