I had not seen any trailers, nor did I see the film at a theater. I was so excited in anticipation of this new Godzilla too. I got the Blu Ray from Netflix today and viewed the film this evening. I thought I was losing my eyesight, nearly everything is shot in the dark. Even the daylight scenes in San Francisco are so black and shades of black, I couldn't make out what was happening. To be fair, even if there was some light thrown onscreen, I still would not have been able to tell what was happening - the film was a total mess! This is the DARKEST film I can ever remember seeing, even when I back lighted it and / or turned up the brightness - nope. I can't blame this film's 'look' on the late and talented 'Prince of Darkness' D.P, Gordon Willis either. Was it just me or my blu ray disc, or was this a problem in theaters as well?

I rented it this week and thought the same basic thing ... a lot of night scenes to help ease the cost of better CGI I assumed.

SPOILERS:
-------------
The movie was somewhat better than I expected (I had set the bar at floor level), but basically it is a mess of a screen play and story line in general. It seemed interesting that they spent so much time dealing with nuclear warheads and then nothing blows up. I didn't even realize til the end that Godzilla is a 'good guy'. Perhaps it's for a sequel that I hope does not happen. (or part of the Godzilla mythology I'm not acquainted with) wink

That's strange.

Yes, there are a lot of night sequences, but I can't remember them being particularly dark compared to other night scenes in other movies (I saw it in the theatre). For the most part, I thought it was wonderfully shot by Seamus McGarvey. I also loved the film itself and the way the whole thing was conceptualized (more emphasis on the monster & less on the humans, sometimes just an observation instead of full-on action etc.). Very philosophical.

Nothing wrong with your eye sight, Godzilla was MIA in the film.

He was in it for the perfect amount of time and with perfect amount of screen exposure.

However much he was in it, he really enjoys coming out of smoke and fog and disappearing into smoke and fog!

There's been comments on other sites about the darkness of the Blu-ray, even from our own Hainshisway. Funny, none of the reviews ever mention it.

I've watched the Blu-Ray, both 2-D and 3-D, and didn't notice any unusual darkness to the picture.
