...do you immediately think "someone is getting his Disney on"?

Disney is using the "Star Wars" universe in TV advertising and psychologically imposing "Disney" upon everything associated with it.

I know they own it. But to my mind, they have nothing to do with Star Wars up to this point in terms of what it represents...its imagery, its characters.

They own it, and in a new set of movies they will reshape the Star Wars Universe to what they feel it should be.
At least it can never get worse then the Prequels.

And Disney payed 4 billion for the rights. Of course they are gonna advertise the shit out of it!

It's all over the Magic Kingdom apparently, and that makes me want to puke. Star Wars shouldn't intermix within the fantasy world of Disney, and vice versa. The esthetics are completely different.
Then again Disney is a soulless trillion dollar (?) corporate conglomerate run by the Evil Empire themselves.

Doesn't bother me at all. Lucas marketed and sold Star Wars to thousands of merchandiers over the years.

As long as the upcoming films and any tie in novels are good quality, I'm happy. I've noticed already a good deal of new Star Wars / Disney branded goods at retail.

I'm not so sure of that. In fact, at the time of its initial release it wasn't uncommon for reviewers of the original movie to liken it to a Disney movie (or to something Disney should be doing).

And even before Disney bought Lucasfilm, Star Wars (and Indiana Jones, as well) had already had a presence in Disney theme parks for most of the time the franchise(s) had been around. Star Tours began running over twenty-five years - a quarter of a century! - before the acquisition was announced.

Why is this being treated as something new? In 1987 Disneyland opened STAR TOURS, which was the best new ride in the park since PIRATES. Ditto in 1995 with the INDIANA JONES ADVENTURE. Disney has betrayed their antecedents a few times in their corporate career, as Lucas has against his creations (those STAR WARS concerts seemed designed to meld the last 3 films into the first 3 as if they were a harmonious whole), and yet they both have done some marvelous stuff. I am holding off judgment until I see the results. Indeed a light saber duel makes me think of the first STAR WARS and Fox. But not the Fox of the other STAR WARS films.

Good points, but it still doesn't sit well with me. Star Wars is about war, even if it's fantasy war. What in Disney's arsenal says war? Besides I'm still waiting for Disney to embrace The Black Hole. wink

I don't care. I just want the movies to not suck. Otherwise, Star Wars was an advertising, merchandising machine from day one. Disney is even more obnoxious when it comes to their product. Magic Kingdom is a mammoth self serving, walking, talking overpriced commercial, so it's a match made in Newark. And people worry if "the Star Wars aesthetic belongs next to Disney?" Yeah, fantasy creatures, magic powers, family struggles, nefarious villains and princesses don't belong next to fantasy creatures, magic powers, family struggles, nefarious villains and princesses....

Movies: just don't suck please.

Everything else: I have better things to care about.
