I just discovered this 2012 title from its run on basic cable and I love it, film and score. I wish I'd seen it in the theater. Howard's KING KONG is one of my favorites, so it should not have come as a surprise. SNOW WHITE is likewise full of colossal, dramatic situations, and that's Howard's wheelhouse. It's good stuff.

Anyway, I just bought the soundtrack. There's one pop song at the end but it's a goodie, much like the situation with BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. It's a bonus; the richly detailed period film is not larded with inappropriate songs [although I was forced to admit recently that even that can work if it's done well, as in THE GREAT GATSBY].

I also viewed the movie on tv not that long ago; I had heard a suite from this score for the first time performed in concert which I found beautiful so I did have some anticipation of the movie. Sadly I had to struggle to finish watching it; mainly due to that Twilight minx, I've still to see her "act" in anything. She was definitely no match for Charlise Theron who even with wrinkles outdid Stewart in every scene. Add to that the now formulaic and even blander love triangle storyline in these type of movies, stock lord of the rings battle fights and unconvincing CGI ... meh. Watching the movie did not strengthen my appreciation of the score in this case, which plays a lot better outside of the movie than it does in it IMO.

While not as good (imho) as Maleficent, Snow White & The Huntsman is a very solid JNH effort. I never understood why it didn't seem to get more love. I really enjoy JNH's After Earth too and it seems many others don't so maybe it is just me. I really don't take movies (unless they claim to be historically accurate) for anything other than ENTERTAINMENT so I enjoyed the movies too.

Didn't care for the film at all, and I didn't notice the music while I watched it. But then when I was at the JNH concert in Ghent a bit later, and they played a suite from it, I was struck by how good at least those particular segments were.

I didn’t enjoy the movie or the score. From the album, the only thing I liked was the Florence + The Machine song, “Breath of Life .“ It works great for my jogging.

I enjoyed both the film and the score. The film was solid entertainment and the score is a pleasant change from the usual crash, bang, wallop, that passes for film music these days.

Never saw the film, but I thought the music was awesome for the most part. It was one of those pleasant surprises for that year.

Ok, I seriously try not to always say stuff like "this cue is the one of the best the composer has ever written" ...

... but really, "White Hart" from Snow White and the Huntsman is one of the best cues the composer has ever written. Full of magic, wonder, awe, lyrical beauty, and thematic grandeur. I'm willing to overlook the ill-advised ear-shattering synth blast at 4:25 (you've been warned) because it works brilliantly in the film and although it does jarringly interrupt the mesmerizing mood of the track, it does segue into some ferociously kickass action music which closes out the cue, featuring an absolutely killer electronically-enhanced snare/brass/string martial rhythm beginning at 6:01.

That track is an epic journey!

The main theme of the score, Snow White's theme, is really great too, and gets very good treatment in the score, in "White Hart" as mentioned above, but it also opens and closes the album just perfectly, in "Snow White" and "Coronation" respectively. "Fenland in Flames," "Death Favors No Man," and "Sanctuary" are all very powerful orchestral powerhouse tracks with bold thematic colors. "Warriors on the Beach" is an exciting action piece.

Some of the more moody pieces do drag the score down a bit it must be said, they just meander too much and are a bit too dreary and ambient.

Zap, you are making me think that I should pay closer attention to this score. I've seen the movie several times. I really like the movie except for Stewart's robotic acting. I've noticed The White Hart music and the coronation music, but everything else seemed to fade into the background. I owe this score another revisit next time I watch the movie.

I think the score is nice enough, but bogged down by too much R/C style action stuff.
I find Maleficent to be superior to SW&TH in every dept.

Yes, it is re-watchable. The music great, but it isn't the whole story. I went back and watched SNOW WHITE again on DVR the very day I saw it. It's a sweeping, heroic saga full of gorgeous images. The charging cavalry scenes are stirring as hell, with the Princess riding to take back her kingdom. So much to like. One touch that I was surprised to notice, and that blew me away, was the costumes. Colleen Atwood was nominated for a best costume Oscar but was absolutely robbed.

If you like interesting dresses, Charlize Theron's changes are worth the whole price of admission. They were touched up in post production to gleam a little more, but the actual dresses are still fantastic.

Wedding dress:

These necklace loops attached to the crown dazzle me, and the armored bodice is amazing:

This textured dress oozes evil and fine detailing:

As a dude, the last thing I ever expected was to be taken with the movie's couture, but this is just one example of how SNOW WHITE is so fully realized in every respect.

I think the problem with Snow White and the Huntsman and to a lesser extent Maleficent is the mastering of the albums. I found both to sound flat on the album while Maleficent was largely gorgeous in the film. A change in mastering style on the albums might make these listenable, though Snow White and the Huntsman would also need to have some synth removed as well.

I agree Zap that the costumes were glorious in this film. Unique, detailed and stunning. I also found some epic scenes such as the attack on the castle, the white deer and others. Gorgeous cinematography.

I thought Charlize Theron was a great villain. She dripped evil. I thought the dwarves were excellent. I also thought Hemsworth did a fine job as the Huntsman. I think too often we think of Hemsworth as simply Thor, and he’s a good Thor. His growing awareness and vulnerability in this movie were touching emotions. I first noticed him as James’s Kirk’s father in the new Star Trek, and I thought he was both heroic in those first 10 minutes as well as vulnerable. He was great as a cocky, womanizing jerk in Rush, and I have read that he is marvelous in Ron Howard’s Heart Of The Sea. I think there is a decent actor under the muscles.

There is a prequel now to this movie that is called The Huntsman due to be released in 2016. It will follow Theron’s and Hemsworth’s early years before Snow White. It has a new director. Now whom will be picked as the composer? I wonder if J N Howard will return.

I actually just picked up this score a couple months ago, being a JNH fan but having never seen the film. True, there are some tedious passages on the OST that bog down the listening experience, but the main theme is noble, moving, haunting—essentially all that you might expect from a fantasy score by James Newton Howard.

After reading comments in this thread, I think I should seek out the film. The cinematography, the set and costume designs, the dark fairy tale twist all seem like they would appeal to me, and I know I enjoy the music already.

That's interesting news about a prequel, Joan, and probably a wise move of them to feature just Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Could produce something of really high caliber. I really will have to watch the first one now to see if the world interests me enough to get excited for it. And I know film composers tend to get shuffled around and dropped or picked up when it comes to sequels/franchises/etc., but I would love to hear more of this from Howard.

For anyone interested, here's my own cut of the OST:

1. Snow White
2. Escape from the Tower
3. You Failed Me, Finn
4. Fenland in Flames
5. Sanctuary
6. White Hart
7. Gone
8. I Remember That Trick
9. Death Favors No Man
10. Warriors on the Beach
11. You Can Not Defeat Me
12. You Can't Have My Heart
13. Coronation
14. Breath of Life

Approx. 53 minutes

I finally got around to seeing Snow White and the Huntsman last week. Overall I really enjoyed the film. Great music and great cinematography go a long way for me so long as the story more or less holds up, and SWATH delivers on both. From its gloomy landscapes to the green paradise of "Sanctuary," home of the faeries, the film looks fantastic. And I agree with Zap, the final charge of the cavalry down the beach with flaming boulders smashing all around them looked incredible. They really found a nice balance between in-camera effects and CGI here. There were some writing issues; mostly there just didn't seem to be enough story to quite sustain the film's length, but this didn't bother me too much on account of the rest of its strengths. I'm certainly game for Frank Darabont's prequel with Theron and Hemsworth, and I really do hope James Newton Howard returns. I honestly haven't been able to stop listening to this album since I picked it up a few months ago.
