There's a surprise Best Seller in Germany at the moment that's actually an official WWII manual for British soldiers on Nazis. Reflecting the mood of the times or is this simply laughable? Christian Kuhn, where are you? wink

I'm disappointed that your thread title is not the book title.

"The portraits of Germans in the book are mostly unflattering. However, it does comment on the high quality of German sausages, coffee and beer."

Yesss, zese are indeed off high kvawlitee. (I don't like either, but if I would, I'd know they'd be of a great quality!

"It warns British soldiers that: 'The Germans are not good at controlling their feelings. They have a streak of hysteria."

VOT ARE YOU TAWKING ABOWT? VE GERMANS ARE A FRENNDLY AND HOSSPITABEL PEEPL. (*heavy breathing*)

"You will find that Germans may often fly into a passion if some little thing goes wrong."

Zis is awlso troo. (The Sun is shining? It's too bright. It's raining? It's too wet. It's windy? Too dusty. Neighbours mowed their lawn before we did? INACCEPTABLE!)

"It urges British soldiers to give orders in a 'firm, military manner' as the German civilian is 'used to it and expects it'."

Back then, that was most certainly the case. I'd argue that even today, getting loud with Germans gets you further, but after six years in Canada, I found the best way to handle annoying fellow citizens is to point at them, laugh (indicating I'm not taking them seriously) and walk away. They can't stand that.

wink

I remember showing a Dutch guide book for Americans to a Dutch friend, the section about culture and people.

He was FASCINATED and wouldn't put it down until he'd finished it.
