I'm enjoying it too. And it's not just a decent drama, it's a richly detailed, cinematic production with fantastic art direction and so forth. The visual details are good.

As weeks pass and other shows debut, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to continue ignoring "Gotham". I may have to break down and watch it.

I love the production design. The sets are interesting, detailed and lush. The two story police dept is a real set. They didn't CGI the upper level. What a difference that makes. There's color, everywhere! What a surprise for a series told in a modern urban setting. I really like Ben McKenzie as Gordon, a lot. I think the whole idea is really interesting. A fairly realistic crime series set in a comic book world. Told mostly straight, but with some quirky yet not over the top characters. Nice spin on a famous property. I like it too and thank you for describing those reasons so well. There are other very good casting choices: I was glad to see Donal Logue was in it; the actor playing Cobblepot is quite the scene-stealer, and the girl they found for Selina is great. Though I was tempted, I have not yet tried Arrow because the images I saw of it made it look like it catered to "hip teenager crowd"; it may not be so, hopefully, but it's the impression I got. I'm wondering about the upcoming Flash too; I loved the 1990s series, which had a great comic booky esthetic without being too silly. Back to Gotham: the views of the city are always awesome, and the Police Department is a fantastic set. The only thing I can't really talk about is the music: the title card cue is very short and has only a hint of a motif, and I can't remember anything much about the score, sadly.

It's frustrating. McKenzie's good in the lead, so it's got that. Logue is also good, though mostly he just makes me wish Terriers hadn't been cancelled because good as he is, I don't care about his character here. But there's way too much Bruce Wayne, and it's hard to see how they'll sustain that character's growth and interest given that he really can't change much, won't become Batman for many years yet, etc. And there's way too many times when the characters are too slow on the uptake or just plain asinine. And the show has a very bizarre mixture of gritty cop drama and extremely cartoonish elements that, so far, don't really gel and don't seem to belong in the same show. And the music doesn't help much and sometimes hurts. It has gotten more watchable in the first few episodes, or at least I've become more accustomed to its flaws, and it's not as painful as some of SHIELD's mid-season episodes, but it's also not as good as SHIELD is now, as far as comics shows go, and it's not in the league of better cop dramas either.

Its an entertaining show so far. I can't say I love it yet, and there aren't any characters I really care much about, but I am happy to continue watching the series. The most interesting character to me so far is Oswald Cobblepot. It will be interesting to see what they do with his character. The cast is great, and they have some great sets, especially the police station. The stories aren't bad. Hopefully the quality of the writing will improve once the main cast is better established. The music has been disappointing so far, particularly the placement of some of the songs, which at times can be jarring. I wish the action sequences were handled better. Much like the action in Agents of Shield, it mostly seems to fall flat. Arrow really sets a high bar when it comes to what you can do with an action sequence in a weekly television show. One aspect I don't like is the mystery surrounding the death of the Waynes. I really hope they don't make their death part of some grander conspiracy that Gordon and company has to unravel. The beauty of Batman's origin is that the murder of the Waynes is some random, senseless murder that could have happened to anyone, and Bruce Wayne is inspired to become Batman to stop his tragedy from happening to anyone else. Having his parents killed as part of some grander scheme IMHO takes away from Batman's origin significantly. I do wonder about the longevity of the series. Once the novelty of showing various members of Batman's rogues gallery wears off will there really be enough to maintain interest in the show? Having to wait until around season 15 for Batman to show up seems like a very long time.

It worked for SMALLVILLE because Clark was old enough to plausibly move about and take action in the world under his own adult authority. GOTHAM will be terrible if it takes a turn toward "Bruce Wayne, Child Crime Fighter!" They must avoid that kind of schlock, leave Bruce and Batman behind, and run the show on its strengths. Selena Kyle is just (barely) old enough to have agency and effectiveness as her own person, and the other standout character is Jim Gordon.

After watching the first two eps I am very pleased. The concept is being handled in a very intelligent way and keeps one interested in future developments of characters such as PENGUIN, RIDDLER etc. On the other hand, I don't like the scenes with young Bruce Wayne!!!! check it out! bruce

Enough with Bruce. The show grinds to a halt whenever that kid is on screen. He might be another Tom Cruise someday, but now is not his moment, just as pubescence is not Batman's moment. Gotham is a playground for grownups, at its best when it's about tough cops in a corrupt system coping with weird villains and a city that plays out the curse, "May you live in interesting times."
