Amazingly, there was no 'general' thread about this iconic TV show and its music (although there are several TWIN PEAKS-themed threads).

I thought I'd do one now as it was just confirmed that Lynch and Frost are returning to the mystical world of Twin Peaks in two years -- with 9 new episodes directed by Lynch himself. This is of course amazing news that's been spreading in social media and newspaper headlines for the last 24 hours.

I have plenty of stories to tell about the original show and music (probably my first-ever soundtrack), but I must admit I'm also terribly excited about what Badalamenti will compose for these new episodes.

What about you?

Twin Peaks is something that my parents watched when I was a kid (it premiered when I was 5 or 6) and the glimpses that I got of it always terrified me. My dad is a huge David Lynch fan, so they dubbed all of the episodes onto VHS. I first watched the pilot movie when I was in maybe 4th grade, and I was too scared by it so I stopped. I braved it again in maybe 5th grade and, while still terrified, fell in love with it all the same. I made it through the whole series. As I grew up, obviously, the subject matter was something that I understood better than my 11-year-old self. I love Twin Peaks for its acting, its cinema, its subversion of genre conventions (what began as a prime time soap became supernatural horror over the course of ~20 episodes). I've watched the series maybe five times now - the only series I've ever rewatched - and each time there are moments that horrify me. Probably somewhat due to my exposure to them as a child, ingraining them as my personal fears, but also due to the sound design, the imagery, the mood.

The music is a large contributer to why I love film music, and thanks to David Lynch's web site, I am ecstatic to own virtually everything recorded from the series and movie (everything that could be found, at any rate). Until I got the Twin Peaks soundtrack, I was primarily a "Danny Elfman fan" and a "John Williams fan." Badalamenti's score was probably my first venture into the larger world of film score.

Mark Frost has done interviews today and was asked about Badalamenti - he can not confirm at this time. But it wouldn't be the same without him, for sure!

Great story, mstrox! Not that different from mine.

I was a bit older than you; some 13-14 years old when the show premiered in Norway. But I was still scared shitless of Bob and other things, but equally inspired by the whole mood. In fact, I got so inspired that I wrote a whole handwritten novel during a summer holiday, ca. 1992, that was much in the same vein. I told this to Badalamenti when I met him in 2010, and he told me to give him a call once I made a film out of it. smile

As I said, the album is probably the first soundtrack I ever got. I copied it on to a cassette from a friend's CD, made my own cover and eventually wore it out. This was actually a couple of years before I became seriously interested in film music and soundtracks, but I still think I owe it a great deal.

Great news about new episodes. I just hope the same actors return.

Like you, I copied the soundtrack from a friend's CD to a tape. I still have the soundtrack on that tape only. :-D

Do you have volume 2? I never got around to buy it, although it's long overdue.

I never did, no. But of course, some years ago Badalamenti released TONS of unreleased cues on a webpage of some sort, so that's an impressive 'volume 2' right there.

I've said it before, Twin Peaks could have been a great mini series if it ended with Laura's killer being revealed and the fallout because we care about Laura. But when the show took it's eye off of Laura and focused on side plots of the various townspeople, that's where the show got into trouble.

I started watching Twin Peaks when it aired. I liked it, but life circumstances got in the way for a while so I checked out at a certain point.

In 1997, my future wife moved in, bringing with her the entire series on VHS, along with the Twin Peaks coffee mug, diary of Laura Palmer, tapes of Special Agent Cooper, and, of course, the soundtrack on CD.

From the beginning, I liked the soundtrack very much, but it was never something I listened to often. The memorable tracks for me are the main theme, the jazzy number that accompanied Audrey, and the sad number starting out with the minor-key synth strings and going to a major key piano theme. The production and samples are very dated, but I don't think I can imagine this music played any other way. It is of its time, and, I suppose, reflective of the production values you would associate with a soap opera. That must have been deliberate.

We later got the volume 2 album and "Fire Walk with Me."

Has anyone downloaded the unreleased tracks from Lynch's website? Any gems?

Incidentally, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and Tom Waits are the only three things I can think of from the 1980s that I like.

Can't wait for more TWIN PEAKS music.

Badalamenti's theme for FIRE WALK WITH ME was excellent. I downloaded some of the unreleased tracks, including the saxophone version of the main theme. Really great piece.

I agree on David Lynch and Tom Waits, but you can have David Cronenberg. I'll take Elvis Costello instead.

I was not a big fan of TWIN PEAKS, though, so I'm not all aflutter about this third season. Of course I'll watch it nonetheless and hope for the best.

The score is another matter. If they don't get Badalamenti back it'll be a real shame.

Interestingly, it was at that exact point that I thought it started to get interesting. The main mystery was OK, but my real attraction to this series was the 'village life' itself -- the mood, the surroundings, the quirky characters. THAT was where my main inspiration lied. I think I could have stayed there forever.

We may well be living in the "Golden Age of Television", but Twin Peaks remains my favourite show of all-time. Maybe it just came along at exactly the right time to captivate an impressionable 12-year old, but it has remained with me ever since on VHS, DVD and (hopefully soon) BluRay.

Like several of you, Twin Peaks opened my eyes (and ears) to the very existence of the soundtrack section, paving the way for Williams' Superman and all the many discs that followed. Still, if facing that old dilemma of a desert island with a working power supply and a stereo, I'd find it hard to choose between those two discs to cling on to as my boat goes down. More so than any other show, music is an essential component of Twin Peaks, as vital as the visuals, the dialogue or any of the wonderful characters.

Having spent more than half my life waiting for more tremendous music than could be provided by the original soundtrack, the FWWM disc (much better than the film) and Julee Cruise's two vocal albums, it was amazing when first the Season Two and More disc, then the Twin Peaks Archive delivered everything I had hoped for. Though I soon had all the tracks I wanted, I bought everything offered through the Archive, in the hope that my continued support would aid other fans, with different taste, to complete their own personal wishlists. By the end, the Archive had delivered almost every note - and certainly every available one - a unique achievement for a unique series.

But, for those that might find the full 200-plus track Archive a little daunting to supplement their cherished Twin Peaks CD, here are my recommendations from my "There's Always Music In The Air" playlist, put together from the Season Two And More disc and the Archive. I'm all about the melodic side of Badalamenti's compositions, so those who favour his jazzy leanings may have other ideas. Archive tracks are denoted by an asterisk.

Twin Peaks Theme (Alternate Version)*
Hook Rug Dance
Twin Peaks Theme (Nostalgia Version)*
Just You
Laura Palmer's Theme (Piano A TK4)*
Twin Peaks Theme (Solo Rhodes)*
Shelly
Love Theme (Solo Rhodes)*
Audrey's Prayer
Just You (Instrumental Baritone Guitar)*
The Norwegians*
Twin Peaks Theme (Harp and Guitar)*
Laura Palmer's Theme (Piano and Rhodes)*
Americana (On The Road)*
Sneaky Audrey*
Twin Peaks Theme (Solo Piano)*
Laura Palmer's Theme (Vibraphone)*
High School Swing
Audrey's Prayer (Synth Version)*
Love Theme (Alternate Version)*
Harold's Theme
Audrey's Prayer (Clarinet & Synth)*
Laura Palmer's Theme (Baritone Guitar Punctuation)*
Just You (Instrumental)*
Josie and Truman
Horne's Theme*
Western Ballad*
Laura Palmer's Theme (Dark Synth)*

If anyone is just looking for a handful of tracks to add to the original CD to make a truly superb Twin Peaks soundtrack, I'd recommend Hook Rug Dance, Twin Peaks Theme (Nostalgia Version)*, Just You and Twin Peaks Theme (Solo Rhodes)* - that last one may well be the finest track of all.

The show's quality through its run is proportional to the number of doughnuts in the conference room of the police station.

It is actually my opinion that this show was a pionéer of the 'high quality television drama' that was to follow from the late 90s onwards (HBO etc.). There were obviously good-quality tv shows before it too, but it seemed to have that kind of cinematic depth that would be all the rage later on.

As much as I love the "Twin Peaks Archive" of lossless music available on DavidLynch.com, the three soundtrack albums are the best (and essentials). Vol. 2 is similar to the original soundtrack and FWWM soundtrack, in that it is edited for the album experience. There are some tracks that play in full, and some suites/edits of multiple tracks, similar to Bookhouse Boys and Night Life on the OST. Thor, I think it would be right up your alley.

Yes, sounds like it. Of course, I also have FIRE WALK WITH ME (I forgot to say that). I'll see if I can find that Vol. 2 -- if nothing else, then in a digital file format.

Volume 2 used to be quite expensive to get, but it's gone a lot cheaper in the last 6 months or so. Maybe it was reissued. I got mine for around 4 pounds

It is a brilliant show, often disturbing but not because it is graphic or gore, which makes it more interesting, it would be great if they could bring back James Marshall and some of these guys whose careers tanked post Twin Peaks.

I just discovered the existence of this book:

http://amzn.to/1saxI56

"Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks examines David Lynch and Mark Frost's legendary television series that aired on the ABC network from 1990-91. As the mystery of "Who Killed Laura Palmer?" played out on television sets across the world, another compelling drama was unfolding in the everyday lives of the show's cast and crew. Twenty-five years later, Reflections goes behind the curtain of Twin Peaks and documents the series' unlikely beginnings, widespread success, and peculiar collapse. Featuring first-hand accounts from series cocreator Mark Frost and cast members including Kyle MacLachlan, Madchen Amick, Richard Beymer, Joan Chen, Sherilyn Fenn, Miguel Ferrer, Piper Laurie, Sheryl Lee, Michael Ontkean, Ray Wise, Billy Zane, and many more - Reflections explores the magic and mystique of a true television phenomenon, Twin Peaks."

Hoping there'll be input from Badalamenti...

The prospect of possible new Badalamenti Twin Peaks music is amazing.

Anyone interested, check out my site dedicated to all the music from Twin Peaks.
