Watertower Music is putting out Thomas Newman's THE JUDGE next week, on October 7th.

There are samples up on their website: http://www.watertower-music.com/releases_spotlight.php?search=WTM39544_judge

Based on the samples, this sounds like a decent Newman score. Very much in the style of "The Help." Is this a download only release?

Loved the clips.

Give this man an Oscar already.

I didn't notice while watching the film itself, but the end credits listed tracked-in cues from Danna's Ice Storm, Horner's Iris, and a Christophe Beck piece called, I think, "Rose Pregnant."

Huh. Kind of like those MOUSE HUNT cues that stuck out like a sore thumb in David Dobkin's FRED CLAUS.

That and the BROKEN ARROW cues in SCREAM 2 were the worst offenders for me. (I didn't realize those were FREUD cues in ALIEN until I bought the FREUD album a few years later)

A little checking suggests it was from The Greatest.

Given that neither Amazon nor any of our beloved soundtrack sites list a CD, I'm guessing this is a download release, at least for now.

Yeah, that's my guess too, although someone in the know told me that certain labels (such as Watertower) will gladly do a download-only release, but then license the music to someone else who wants to do a run of physical copies somewhere down the line. I guess that's what just happened with LLL announcing their release of TRANSFORMERS: JUST 4 THE MONEY after the digital release has been out there for months.

I can't imagine that THE JUDGE will be such a powerhouse at the box office that anyone would want to pick it up for a physical release later on, but who knows? I'd be perfectly happy with a digital only release if only it were available at CD-equivalent quality.

Me too. Happy to buy a CD or a lossless download, but will not spend real money for yet another lossy download.

Wish these larger labels (iirc, WaterTower is part of WEA) would recognize that some of us truly care about the audio quality of the playback.

I think those Watertower CD-Rs often aren't announced until they are actually available, so I wouldn't be shocked if this one suddenly appears for sale on Amazon sometime next week (here's hoping, anyway).

Not that it matters, but WaterTower is not part of WEA. It's confusing, but Warner Music Group (while once a part of Warner Bros.) is now a completely separate company (just as Universal Music Group no longer has any connection to Universal Studios). WaterTower is a division of Warner Bros.

It sounds like....a Thomas Newman score.

Downloaded it with high expectations based on the clips. But this is quite boilerplate for Thomas Newman. There's one really lovely theme found in the cuts "Indiana" and "Ten Speed" (only 58 seconds long), but it's barely used. Otherwise it's vintage Newman---lots of tinkle tinkle and extended string lines. By the numbers.

Two and a half stars.

Nice review. My feelings, too. I like the "Indiana" cut best.

I think this is a very fair review. I'm a big Thomas Newman fan, so I enjoy the score. It's a nice listen. But surprising, it is not.
