Always thought it was so cool how Stonn in AMOK TIME looked so much like he could be a brother to Spock. The actor Lawrence Montaigne who played Stonn and also played Decius in BALANCE OF TERROR had such a great look and stoic quality about him. Wished Stonn showed up again in a TOS Episode and he and Spock had some great scenes together. Also, it would have been nice to see Montaigne appearing in any of the Star Trek Feature Films as any character they could have given him. I really enjoyed his work on TOS.

What is your favorite music used for Vulcans in any STAR TREK show or Film?

I like Horner's Spock material in 2 and 3 of the Features.

Horner's Main Spock Theme:

Some nice Spock stuff in the Original Series as well. Those instruments used were perfect for the feeling of Spock.

Some stuff on Lawrence:

Up until now, I *never* realized Decius and Stonn were played by the same actor. I just pictured in my head for Pete's sake and saw the had the same face 8-o!

Horner's Vulcan music is definitely my favourite. I like Fried's theme and I see the rationale behind it ('play an emotionless instrument emotional') but somehow it never gelled. Horner's distant, stoic yet emotionally layered theme paints a far more fulfilling picture of Vulcan's. Giacchino was wise to copy the approach.

Yes, here's Lawrence as Decius from BALANCE OF TERROR:

For me, it's Fried's music all the way. I enjoy what Horner did, but Fried's theme, especially on (bass?) guitar has haunted me all my life.

I couldn't quite believe it when the GNP Crescendo album came out and I could listen to it any time I like. I think it is one of the essential musical signatures in all of television music.

I too, am ashamed to say I never realized Stonn and Decius were one and the same - guess I just thought it was the Romulan/Vulcan resemblance. wink

All of them. Seriously, I can’t choose.

Giacchino? Gorgeous. It can even be played as an action cue!

Goldsmith? Perfect. PURE logic. It’s not happy. It’s not sad. It’s just relentless.

Horner? (I’ll just lump Eidelman in here too.) Wonderful. The wise old sage.

Fried? Oh my goodness, yes. Spock at his most heartbreakingly outcast and miserable.

Horner's cue "Spock" in Star Trek II is perfect. Love how it's kept low-key in that cue with the gentle harp notes, then returns in a huge way at the end. Same with the full orchestral version in "Returning to Vulcan" cue in ST III.

Outside of Stonn & Decius. I recall him playing a robot in a Batman episode. But a commercial he did for Edge shaving cream ("protective shave") really stands out. He was a rather charismatic pitchman in that one.

Very nice cue indeed!

Yes, meant to add that I agree wholeheartedly.

I can't fault any of the music. It's all so effective and evocative in TOS and II & III.

Even Goldsmith's little motif for Spock's return to the Enterprise seems so effective (though Fried's brooding bass theme would have probably worked there, too, considering Spock's state of mind at the time)
