What a score this is. I think the main theme is the best I've heard by Sarde. Both beautiful and tinged with epic tragedy. Never seen the film, but I love the music so much I don't really need to. The images it conjures in my head make it a masterpiece anyway. I was sure there was a previous thread about this gorgeous score, but I could not locate it, so feel free to leave your love for it here.
Brilliant score!!!! Never get tired of it!!! An easy "desert island" score if your stuck for days, weeks or a lifetime!!! Another "desert island" score: Kilar's PAN TADEUSZ!!!
I love it! When that cello starts rolling across the orchestra in the opening track I always get a smile on my face.
The 5 minute track "Juillet 1911" (on the old Milan cd) is omitted from the Universal France release. And it easily could have fit. A kick in the soundtrack-collecting nuts.

One of my favourite scores from a time that Sarde was working with the exceptional British orchestrator Peter Knight...who also did Tess

A beautiful score. I have it on vinyl but could never get it on CD. The same goes for Sarde's equally lovely Tess. Were either ever release on CD?
Both are on Universal France releases. As pointed out above Saganne does miss a track, as does TESS which misses the "pop" arrangement of the theme. I think the France release contains more score than the LP.
Yes. Both Fort Saganne and Tess are available on CD, coupled with other scores in the latter editions. I didn't know the original Milan issue had become so expensive (nor that it has an extra track excluded on the re-issue two-fer released later). While the cover of the old Milan ain't any great shakes, in comparison to those hideous 'pole signs stuck in the middle of nowhere' cover re-issues, it's a work of art.
The Milan Release has an extra track compared to the Universal one (a track which runs over 5 min). But the Universal release is paired with "Le Choix des armes" (the choice of arms) which my favorite Sarde score ever (and I'm a big Sarde fan). So I would advise people to go for that release.

It's best to have both (like I do). I only listen to the Universal release for Le Choix des Armes and to the Milan release for Fort Saganne (given that it's longer). Both scores are also among my Sarde favorites (one of the best composers of film music ever, in my opinion).
If you like Le Choix des Armes, I suppose you also enjoy Un Frere, which has similar arrangements, this time of the theme originally from La Fille de d'Artagnan (another of my Sarde favorites)?
I have Fort Saganne on DVD but actually haven't watched it yet.
Also, I still hope that more Sarde scores will see the light of the day. There hasn't been one in the Universal France series for some time, maybe Quartet will give us another lovely presentation of some of his music?

Thanks. Hope I can someday get them without breaking the bank. It was Saganne and Quest for Fire which really got me interested in Sarde.
Tess us doubled up on CD with another great Sarde score, The Tenant, which I am showing in my Intro to Film class tonight in about 20 minutes. I'm always curious to see if any students comment on the score after seeing the film.
I'm surprised this magnificent score hasn't had a Deluxe Expanded edition. Film is 3 hours long, CD has about 45 minutes on it. Anyone know how much score is unreleased? Sarde is well looked after these days, especially by the French labels. I wonder if a definitive edition of this is in the works?

Although the film is 3 hours long, it doesn´t have wall to wall music. There are often longer pauses in which no music appears at all. All in all, there is maybe an hour of underscore in the film. It could be that 10 or at the maximum about 15 minutes are unreleased. But all the essential tracks are already on the album.
Thanks Stefan. That's good to know (that we're not missing lots of great unreleased score). Don't get me wrong, I think the Milan CD I have is a wonderful experience and I'm more than happy with it. It's just that this is a score I imagined would have been 'Deluxed' by now by one of our labels.

Yes. Not every 3 hour film has a ton of music. See PATTON, OUT OF AFRICA, etc.
