Biographies of John Green always highlight a song he wrote in 1930, long before his Hollywood days. Here's an interesting piece on the tune, which seems to have achieved special prominence in jazz improvisation circles: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/fishko/

This song has long been a favourite of mine - Benny Goodman's live rendition (Carnegie Hall 16 Jan 38) is a good example. I recall having a tape recording of a Louis Armstrong live concert (approx. 1948) which included a superb recording but that's long gone from my collection.

Of the vocal versions, Frank Sinatra's 1947 take with Axel Stordhal and Bobby Hackett is, of course, my favourite though it's not really his song (as so many others are) ... and Kathy Kirby's 1960's version is well worth a spin.

But this is such a wonderful melody it doesn't need lyrics.

Mitch
