Our good friends at WaterTower Music have informed us that the score for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has commenced recording in New Zealand.

As with the previous Middle-earth films, the music for the final film has been composed by Howard Shore.

In conjunction with this news, we are also excited to reveal the cover art for Original Soundtrack to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
The album is set to be released on December 16, 2014.

Here's hoping that this will FINALLY be the HOBBIT score that I will like, because outside a track or two, I've found the first two to be HUGE disappointments (even though I liked the films themselves).

Thor is right, people. Thor is right.

It doesn't even sound like Shore's really into it, either.

At last somebody is speaking the truth about these scores!

I thought it was a fairly common sentiment?

What I'd like, and what I won't get, is an edited down 1-disc version of the score as the standard edition, and then the full 2-disc deluxe edition we've been getting. I think part of the reason I haven't found myself as enthralled with The Hobbit scores as I was with LOTR is because there is no presentation of the film's music boiled down to its essence. It takes me quite a bit of work to really get into them - if active listening can be considered work.

I certainly don't have as strong positive feelings about The Hobbit scores as I do about Shore's LOTR, but I enjoy them a lot and consider them probably within the top three scores of their respective years.

The scores are rather uninvolved. I like more parts in the first one (I can't even remember the subtitle to it) most because the second score only has one good cue across two albums. There is a serious lack of themes compared to the LOTR series.

And let me say this: These Hobbit films are infinitely worse than the Star Wars prequels.

I wouldn't agree that they're quite that bad! Both are products of excess and a particular inability to focus. The difference being, the Hobbit movies have moments of excellence buried within them (which I never felt about the SW prequels) - Bilbo and Gollum in the first, Bilbo and Smaug in the second. Nothing in the prequels felt as fun, to me, as the barrel chase in the second Hobbit.

Man are the Hobbit movies bad, though.

Funny how you pointed out the part of the second film that made me want to drive hot-fireplace pokers into my eyes! (Love the music to that part though)

I'm right there with you, LeHah -- it's just an incredibly stupid scene. And actually, this trilogy is easily my least favorite film adaptation of anything ever! I'll pick up a copy of the OST out of loyalty to Shore, but I've never been more disappointed in any film or adaptation than I have been in The Hobbit films.

I like the cover art for this one. I didn't like the first Hobbit film at all, but I felt like it improved immensely with the second one. I still think this whole series could have been made into one killer three and a half movie, instead of 3 very long drawn out movies. Shore's music isn't nearly as good or memorable in these as it was in the LOTR, but it's still decent. I thought the second score was much better as well, but I don't revisit much.

I managed to compile a decent 40 minute playlist from the first film. The second score is totally forgettable. Didn't bother seeing the second film either.

I guess I'm the only one who actually LIKES the first two films a lot (especially for what they are....they are NOT Lord of the Rings, folks!). Which makes it all the more disappointing that the scores are so lacklustre.

Man, what's with all the Hobbit / Shore hate? Granted, neither of the two scores thus far have been of the caliber of the original LOTR saga, but still, I believe they're musical masterpieces in their own right. Can't wait for the third score, and movie, to be released!

Hear, hear!

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you've said, except that your very final clause doesn't quite apply to me; I listen to Desolation of Smaug with some frequency. While this score as a complete work doesn't reach the heights of Shore's scores for The Lord of the Rings, I believe some of his individual themes (Tauriel & Kíli, Smaug) absolutely do. I greatly anticipate Shore's score for The Battle of the Five Armies. Hopefully the film provides for some more amazing Middle-earth battle music. I'm also interested to see which of Shore's established Middle-earth themes will appear this one final time.

Another mega-franchise on autopilot, but it beats Marvel/DC franchise slates by a damn sight.

Could you by any change post the tracklisting (or editing guide, if it contains any edits) for your playlist? Thanks.

Here's my own shortened playlist for An Unexpected Journey:

1. Old Friends (6:30) [first 2:50 is the first 2:50 of "Old Friends" and the last 3:39 is the last 3:39 of "An Unexpected Party"]
2. Axe or Sword? (5:59)
3. Misty Mountains (1:43)
4. The Adventure Begins (2:06)
5. The World is Ahead (2:21)
6. An Ancient Enemy (4:58)
7. Roast Mutton (4:03) [single-disc version, not the film version]
8. The Hidden Valley (1:40) [first 1:35 of the original track]
9. Over Hill (3:44)
10. The White Council (4:54) [first 4:50 of the original track]
11. Under Hill (1:55)
12. Brass Buttons (2:58) [plays from 4:39 to end of original track]
13. Out of the Frying-Pan (5:55)
14. A Good Omen (5:47)
15. Song of the Lonely Mountain (6:01)
16. Erebor (1:20)
17. The Dwarf Lords (2:02)

Roughly an hour long if you don't include the two concert tracks at the end. Just over if you do.

I posted my slightly longer abridged version of Desolation of Smaug on one of these threads some time ago, but can re-post it here if you're interested.
