Famous french composer died this morning; He was 89.

He was well known for being a major figure of the french new wave era, working with Truffaut, Tavernier and Godard.

He will be missed - RIP

Very sad news.

I've often used his PIERROT LE FOU score -- mangled as it often was by Godard -- as an example of alternative scoring in my lectures.

RIP.

Sorry to hear this unfortunate news. Duhamel was a daring composer with a strong musical voice. I wasn't aware that he studied with Messiaen, but I can't say I'm surprised to learn that he did.

From the linked obituary: "Godard..., according to Duhamel, taught him 'how we use music.'"

RIP, Maestro Duhamel.

Hi, Essankay.

Duhamel also studied with René Leibowitz.

AD was one of many born in 1925 (the Pierre Boulez generation) who spearheaded the post-WWII serialism.

Mikis Theodorakis is another who studied in France during the 1950s with Olivier Messiaen.
I recall reading that Theodorakis was roommate with Iannis Xenakis in 1955.

There is a lot of music by Duhamel that remains unreleased. I understand Duhamel co-authored (along with Pierre Jansen) a score for a D.W. Griffith silent movie which I very much would love to hear.

These are the only two CDs of Monsieur Duhamel's works I own. Not enough to be sure, but more than sufficient to convince of his great talent.

Two works come to mind: PIERROT LE FOU - in particular a cue titled Pierrot

and DOMICILE CONJUGAL which combines familiar Mendelsohn strains with an almost Stravinskian beat and energy that leaves one simultaneously baffled and delighted,

He'll be sorely missed.

I have 8 CD's by Antoine Duhamel in my collection. Next to some titles already mentioned here - such as the Godard and Truffaut films - I have always been very fond of his score for The Sailor from Gibraltar, unfortunately unreleased in any form. Beautiful music and an interesting film.

RIP

There is a lot of music by Duhamel that remains unreleased. I understand Duhamel co-authored (along with Pierre Jansen) a score for a D.W. Griffith silent movie which I very much would love to hear.

ToneRow, you can listen to really long excerpts of the Duhamel/Jansen score for Griffith's INTOLERANCE by scrolling down on this website to the "Suite Symphonique" and then clicking on the "Extraits musicaux":
http://www.zzproductions.fr/bonus.htm#

And you can buy the French DVD version of the film with their music here:

Or here where it is cheaper:

I hope that Universal France will produce a CD album dedicated to Duhamel in the next few months. Lerouge was and is a great fan of the composer and has also published in 2007 an interview book he did with Duhamel (of course it is in French):

By the way, Duhamel had also composed a new score for the silent movie L'HOMME DU LARGE by Marcel L'Herbier in 1983 which is available on this double DVD:
http://www.amazon.fr/films-Marcel-lHerbier-Dorado-Lhomme/dp/B0040UEIPE/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1410514733&sr=1-1&keywords=homme+du+large

Thanks for letting us know, Stefan.

I listen to these 3 selections over the weekend, and the composition exceeds my expectations (which were rather high to begin with).

Great music.
