MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 STAR WARS: EPISODE VII---spoiler alert (see below). THE STAND---spoiler alert (see below). NAMING THE RIPPER---author Russell Edwards said he wrote his upcoming book in which he claims to have finally solved the identity of Jack the Ripper after being inspired by the 2001 movie FROM HELL starring Johnny Depp. He said Jack the Ripper is Aaron Kosminski, who was a suspect at the time of the killings and was a 23-year-old Polish immigrant and hairdresser. Edwards and his associate, university genecist Jari Louhelainen, used DNA from the shawl of victim Catherine Eddowes which contained her blood and semen from the Ripper. Louhelainen compared the DNA on the shawl to DNA from the descendants of Eddowes and Kasminski and got a match. Edwards stated, "I've got the only piece of forensic evidence in the whole history of the case. I've spent 14 years working on it, and we have definitively solved the mystery of who Jack the Ripper was." Kosminski died in an insane asylum in 1899 of gangrene. FURY---second official trailer released for the Brad Pitt World War II movie which premieres on October 17. Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3z7Rb00ZTM TRUE DETECTIVE---Justin Lin (FAST AND THE FURIOUS) is in talks to direct two episodes in Season 2. Also, Rachel McAdams and Elisabeth Moss are candidates to play the female lead, a sheriff with a troubled past (Moss has previously denied being a candidate). HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER---the series finale alternate ending has been posted online and will be included in the complete series dvd set. Alternate ending link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLKKbXsbYbY IRON MAN 4---Robert Downey, Jr. has signed contracts to appear in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and THE AVENGERS 3, but he said about a fourth Iron Man movie, "There isn't one in the pipe. No, there's no plan for a fourth 'Iron Man.'" REAL STEEL---director Shawn Levy commented on a sequel to the 2011 Hugh Jackman movie, "We have been quietly developing a sequel to REAL STEEL for three and a half years. We've come up with some great scripts but Hugh and I would only make it if the plot feels fresh, but also the character journeys feel fresh, and we've found both but never at the same time...I know the clock is ticking. That movie, weirdly, for a movie that did very well globally--it did okay domestically--but the love for REAL STEEL remains kind of unique as far as rabid fans who ask me all the time for another one. Hugh and I love that movie so if we can crack it, we'll make it, but I have this sense that we better make that happen soon or frankly, the audience may not be there in the same way. So we shall see." MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5---Sean Harris (PROMETHEUS, THE BORGIAS) is in negotiations to play the villain. THE KILLER---movie underway based on the first novel in the Victor the Assassin novels by Tom Hinshelwood. Pierre Morel (TAKEN) is the director. JESSICA CHASTAIN---the actress (ZERO DARK THIRTY) said about appearing in a superhero movie, “I would love to do a superhero movie! I would have loved to have played Black Widow. A couple of times I’ve gotten really close (Chastain was originally cast as Maya Hansen in IRON MAN 3 but left due to schedule problems). The problem is, if I do a superhero movie, I don’t want to be the girlfriend. I don’t want to be the daughter. I want to wear a f***ing cool costume with a scar on my face, with fight scenes. That’s what I’d love.” DREDD---Karl Urban said a possible second movie would be a prequel instead of a sequel, "...there is a definite possibility. But, it is more likely that we will do the origins story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo." PENNY DREADFUL---Patti LuPone will be a recurring guest star in Season 2. MYTHBUSTERS---the Discovery Channel replied to a petition with 33,000 signatures requesting that Kari Byron be rehired after she, Tori Belleci and Grant Imahara were fired, "We are all big fans of Kari as well as Tory and Grant and are looking for other projects where we can work with them." * * * * * * * * STAR WARS: EPISODE VII---a source claims the following are details from the second draft of the script by Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams: 1. Leia is made leader of the Republic after her predecessor's death. 2. Han is a retired veteran of the Republic fleet. 3. Luke hasn't been seen in nearly 30 years. 4. The lead character is Han and Leia's daughter. 5. The other lead is the child of Lando, and either a male or female depending on who is cast. 6. The other lead is a Stormtrooper, also either a male or female depending on who is cast. 7. Dialogue for these two characters is very rough in the second draft. 8. Luke has no known offspring. 9. The Empire still exists in the form of a number of loyal galaxies and are in a state of cold war with the Republic. 10. The Empire is simply referred to as the "Empire," and the Republic is referred to formally only once, as the "Galactic Republic;" no "New" anywhere. 11. There are no Jedi whatsoever, and people still speak as if they are extinct, with Luke being "the last of his kind". 12. The main antagonists are an older student of the Emperor, and his apprentice. 13. The apprentice takes control of the power dynamic between the two pretty quickly. 14. The Republic are excavating ruins on a neutral world for a weapon; the world factors into tense negotiations the Empire have had with the Republic, and is referred to as the "Sith Homeworld". 15. Loredump: In the script, the Sith are a couple thousand years old, founded by an ancestor of Palpatine called Ruin; the apprentice in this film also goes by that name the ruins within the Sith Homeworld are a control station; the planet itself is the weapon. 16. Luke saves the day at the end, but in a bad way; he has changed. If these points are true, they might confirm rumors that John Boyega is playing a Stormtrooper, Daisy Ridley is playing the daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia and Crystal Clarke is playing Lando Calrissian's daughter. Another source said a villain is a descendant of Count Dooku and is played by Gwendoline Christie (GAME OF THRONES) that Benedict Cumberbatch had been rumored for. Also, Liam Neeson said he hasn't been contacted about returning as Qui-Gon Jinn. Below is a fan-generated poster. THE STAND---a source said the three-hour, R-rated movie will have a different ending than the Stephen King novel: "In this version, from last year, the good guy survivors from Boulder get together in an army and march on Las Vegas to kill Randall Flagg. Flagg's headquarters is, of course, the Luxor Pyramid. The Boulderites invade the city while, off to the east, a squad fights at the Boulder Dam - which Trashcan Man explodes, killing Larry Underwood and sending a deadly flood to Vegas. In the city Flagg squares off against hero Stu Redman... who now has the power of God, and they have an Akira-like battle on the Las Vegas Strip, with Flagg trying to take Stu's magic. Cars are thrown, Excalbur's turrets are tossed, the people of Vegas are used by Flagg as disposable cannon-fodder. Meanwhile Nick Andros sacrifices his life taking out a howitzer. The Boulder forces, while armed, try to only take prisoners and rescue people from being under Flagg's evil spell. It all comes down to Flagg and Stu, and whether or not Stu will absorb Flagg's evil magic."

King's novel was overwrought in places and had too many of his close-to-cliche characters ( keep in mind I love most of King's books, this one included ), but it was a wild, crazy scary ride with some wonderful moments. This finale just sounds like an Akira rip off...and how the hell does Stu get "the power of God" ? Blech. Just stop already.
