Dont know how i missed this, couldnt find any threads.
Died in August 19th. Capable, instinctively-talented man, enjoyed his work.

Bit predictable but gotta say it.

Broadsword calling Danny Boy!

Always puzzled by why Hutton, after the two big hits of WHERE EAGLES DARE and KELLY'S HEROES, went off track with the films he did after that. One could see him parlaying those two hits into a continuing career as an action director since he seemed so good at it. Still fun to see him showing up in the supporting casts of many 50's films and tv shows.

BILLCARSON:

Thanks for the link.
Years ago, Wikipedia's bio on Hutton said he left the movie business to become a New York plumber.
I felt that info was dubious and eventually found an article by a guy who said Hutton was a friend of a friend. The guy, through their mutual friend, arranged for a phone conversation in which Hutton said he left Hollywood for a successful real estate career.
So tonight, I'll probably watch Blu-rays of WHERE EAGLES DARE followed by HIGH ROAD TO CHINA (no KELLY'S HEROES---I watched it not too long ago).

I seem to recall someone on another board posting an interview with Hutton. I'll see if I can find it.

It's a shame on the blu-ray/dvd versions of KELLY'S HEROES, WHERE EAGLES DARE and HIGH ROAD TO CHINA, there are no commentaries.
Obviously commentaries by Clint Eastwood. Brian G. Hutton, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, Tom Selleck, Bess Armstrong, Wilford Brimley, et al. would have provided greater insight into the movies and made them more enjoyable.

Years ago, I posted about the FSM KELLY'S HEROES cd which includes the romantic vocal "Si Tu Me Dis' and wondered about it since there are no women in the movie. As it turns out, Ingrid Pitt, who co-starred in WHERE EAGLES DARE, was supposed to reunite with Eastwood and Hutton in KELLY'S HEROES, but her role was canceled just before she was to fly to Yugoslavia for filming.

I was lucky enough to interview Ingrid about her role in WED - she recalled she had been invited to a special screening of it years later for Q and A session and had some interesting things to say about filming - Taylor showing up and flashing her diamond and how her original Heidi role was cut and cut due to pressure from Mary Ure.

WED is a fantastic bit of film-making. It has location and studio work interweaved in such a way it doesn't detract from the on-screen action. Superbly edited and rendered, with a perfectly spotted score by Ron Goodwin (and given to us by FSM.) It's almost James Bond with a shoulder parrot in the guise of Burton and Eastwood, respectively. It's a WWII action thriller with a unique sense of immersion - all in the wake of Guns Of Navarone - both films have the taste of originality. Hutton was very lucky to have had the opportunity to deliver the work with such personnel and funding. But Danny bloody Boy, didn't he do well! RIP.
