What does anyone think? There's been much condemnation of Murray Gold's latest take on Ron Grainer's classic theme tune across the Who fan sites, and I too hated it when it first aired a week and a half ago. Since then I've mellowed a little.
It has weak baseline, after a nice intro replacing Gold's own that graced it well since 2010. But that baseline disappears under the worst high part for many years. It's been described as sounding like a strangled cat. But it does have a nice addition in the form of bells!
I like it actually. I heard it by chance last week when it was on TV before I got around to switching the channel as I think Doctor Who is a load of old hokum, but I thought it was quite catchy.
I'm not a huge fan of it, either. I very much preferred any of the versions used for Matt Smith's run (I preferred those intros visually to this latest one, too).
Put me in the "anti" category. I've played it several times to see if my opinion changes and I still hate it. The new graphics are cool but this arrangement of the theme is the weakest I've ever heard. And I normally love everything about Gold's scores. But this theme arrangement? no no no.
I just wish the high part was less teeth jarring. It's like a chalk scraping across a blackboard. The rest I've become accustomed to, and I quite like the intro and the bells. They even gave us back a decent 'sting' at the start of Robot of Sherwood. Basically the one that graced Series 1-4 and Specials year, which, like the Series 1-3 theme arrangement was the original (Classic Series) 'souped up'.
