He wrote the theme song (It's a Jungle Out There) and also the series ending song (When I'm Gone), both of which have never and by his own words will never be released.

The same as the theme song to Psych.

It apparently is a rights issue and the way that USA Network writes their contracts.

I think the song he wrote for the finale, "When I'm Gone," wound up on iTunes, but I don't believe the MT ever did.

Yeah, "When I'm Gone" was on iTunes, however briefly.

Interesting. How did the first theme - and album, for that matter - get released? Is the implication that the Jeff Beals of the world settle for deals that the Randy Newmans of the world reject?

I liked Newman's theme song a lot, when the main titles would play, Donna and I would sing along in our best Randy Newman impersonations big grin

It was a nice catchy song, but Jeff Beal's original theme was better ( my opinion ) and kinda got screwed razz

It's worth noting that Beal himself has been remarkably gracious concerning the theme replacement, and has openly praised Newman's contributions. There's no bad blood, as it were. We talked about it a little in the FSM Online interview I conducted back in 2010, just after the series ended. You can read it here, if you have a subscription (and also hear some exclusive sound clips of unreleased music scattered throughout):
