I usually prefer expanded and complete releases over the shorter ones but in the case of SPEED, a score that I like very much, I find myself playing the original Fox release much more often than the complete LLL version. Since the complete version includes a lot of previously unreleased atnospheric stuff at least IMO it takes a lot of speed out of SPEED. I find the original Fox version to be a perfect listening experience.

I wonder what the other board members think.

And nevertheless I am happy to have the complete version as well smile

Having grown up in a time during which heavily edited score albums were the only alternative (if a score was released at all), I always prefer the complete version - since I can easily create my own playlist from it that may omit tracks I´m not so fond of.

Sometimes, of course, when the edited version was around for ages, I have grown so comfortable with it that a complete version feels weird to me (at first). My preference for the edited version (in the case of SPEED) is there, but I welcome the additional material and different flow of the complete album.

Here is my take on the phenomenon of wanting a complete expanded music on cd and then perhaps finding it a difficult to digest on the whole.

In the olden days circa 1970's to late 1990s, we used the get very brief 35-45 minute score representation on either Lp or CD formats. As fans our exposure to that particular score came in first through the film. Granted we loved the film or hated but we wanted the score and in particular hoped that all the cues that one liked were on the album to begin with but of course that was not the case. The albums was just a highlights and fairly rounded out as general listening experience by the composer [I know Thor is with me on this.. right?]

At the time film scores because of that missing music had a yearning amongst us. And subsequently various revisits to the film on video kind of burned the music in our memories and hence the build up and anticipation to get hold of that missing music some day.

So now we are in the golden age days where the complete score expansions and the subsequent alternates and demos [boy! we have been so spoilt] come by; its almost unbelievable. Its a fans ultimate dream come true the way LLL, Varese, FSM, Intrada etc have done to us.

Nowadays the market is flooded with 6-7 cds in a month (expansions reissues). There is everything for every one and so little time. I have about 10 expansion and re-issues lying as a treasured loot that i have yet go through. I have barely played through my previous batch. Im trying to be methodical, trying to watch the film again-get swept by it again and race back to the cd and figure out my favourite cues.

My point is I need to take it slowly. So I can absorb it, age with it and enjoy it. If I rush through the album; I will become impatient and probably skip the tracks.

Some albums I wasn't familiar with like Goldsmith's INCHON which was issued by Intrada. Luckily it is a 2cd with the original LP release and the full score. Guess what! I am still on the LP version because Im trying to familiarise myself with it. I have seen the film either. buts going to take its time. Same thing happened to me on THE CHALLENGE and NIGHT CROSSING- I love these scores and my initial feelings were somewhat less enthusiastic.

Im kind of glad that we have at times both the LP album release and the full score released as a combo. It makes for a better perspective and both are remastered in the first place so you could enjoy at your preferred listening choice.

Once the La-La Land version came back, I haven't looked back at the Fox version at all. This is now the definitive version for me, and that is what I am going to listen to...plus it just sounds better.

The best addition to the LLL version over the Fox is the music for Jack jumping onto the bus, which was the clip that they always showed before the movie came out. Always bugged me that this cue wasn't on the album, and like, ALL of the elevator sequence music was.

Also not of note to anyone, but Speed was the first CD I ever bought from the internet, from CD Now in 1994.

I bought the score CD 20 years ago, that's enough for me. I have no interest in the complete and expanded version.

Fox - 40 minutes or so and so out of order that "The Rescue" comes third.

La-La Land - almost 70 minutes, in film order and ends with Billy Idol.

No contest.

I have no issue with albums being out of order. Having said that, the La La Land release actually flows better to me than the Fox CD and is much more enjoyable. The first release put the highly energetic music at the very beginning of the CD and then the 2nd half was more the suspense music. The La-La Land release seems to flow much better (in chronological order).

Just listened to all the previously unreleased tracks that are found on the LLL album. They are either competely atmospheric sound design cues or have a lot of that in them. Since the Fox release left those tracks out it generated a better flow and is a more ebtertaining listening experience. At least IMO smile

Mmmm, must be playing a different record, I thought there were some excellent albeit
short new action cues on LLL's fantastic sounding expansion. Great liner notes too, **** stars,
adios Fox CD for me.

Well, I doubt I have to say which version I prefer! smile

The film was a contemporary action masterpiece, and the score was highly influential as well.

Pop Quiz (minus the first part), Jack Jumps Onto Bus, Jack Leaves The Bus, Jack Under The Bus, Getting On The Train, Runaway Train... All fantastic previously unreleased action pieces.

But, to each their own, right?

I bought the score CD 20 years ago, that's enough for me. I have no interest in the complete and expanded version.

The sound is superior and the complete presentation is far worth it.

I say this to you because this is one of the few scores that I never have to hit skip button on. I will sit and listen to each track from start to finish. Usually I jump around tracks or play a set list. Not with this score! It gets my full attention.

I still play this thing weekly and I probably will for a very long time. This is in my top five favorite releases of all time.

Well, I guess I have "moved on" a bit since the Media Ventures action scores of the mid 90s. It's not really something I play often anymore. That's the most important reason why I will not buy another version of the score.

I prefer the FOX version as well.

The LA-LA Land edition may sound better and have all these extra cues, it kills the flow and energy the original had.

Plus the FOX it SHORTER, which in this day and age is a welcome thing for me, since my attempts as of late to fully appreciate these full complete multi disc editions often are a futile thing. There is no limit on how long an album can be, there is however a limit on the time available I have to listen to any given album.

BUT... any score I deem a "masterpiece", such as Conan The Barbarian, Poltergeist, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc., then I absolutely welcome EVERY note. We can always make room for the best! smile
