We are dealing with the illness of a family member right now and it is keeping me so distracted and stressed. However, I still have to work to pay the damn medical bills so I turn to my music to get me through the day. I have discovered - no great surprise here - that Georges Delerue is getting me through more than any composer at the moment. I listened to - and this is no exaggeration - Joe Versus the Volcano three times today. The Love Theme just takes me to a happier place. A dear friend sent me a copy of American Friends and this was played today as well. I then reached for A Summer Story and Steel Magnolias. I already have my line-up ready for tomorrow. Merci beaucoup Georges, vous apportez-moi la paix.

The power of Delerue's bittersweetness! Not to be underestimated.

I don't know how close this family member is, but I wish you and your family all the best in this difficult time.

Yes, best wishes to you and your family at this time. My mother died a couple of years ago and I found that listening to my favourite composer John Barry helped me then as well. I think it was the familiarity with his music and melodies that was comforting to me.

I'm glad that you have been able to find some peace through film music. I find the right piece can really help me through the day as well. I hope you continue to find peace through film music for the rest of the week and through the weekend. Anything that can help you hang through it lets you stay strong for those who need you.

"Why is my heart marooned without you...The sun goes down, my dreams begin their refrain..."
Such a lovely melody and lyric.
Glad the power of our beloved film music is helping you through edwz, hope everything turns out fine.

Music has stange powers. It was Shostakovich that helped me in the 80s when I was negotiating a relationship break-up and professional exams at the same time. Hope things work themselves out for you.

I keep going back to "Joe Versus the Volcano" over and over to get me through this situation that continues and I so wish I could tell Mr. Delerue how much I adore this score. I am convinced that this man had a beautiful soul to have produced such lovely music.

Apologies for not responding earlier; I've only just now come across your post.

edwzoomom, my sympathies on your family's situation; I do know it can be deeply trying to have a loved one with an extended illness. My sincere best wishes for full health for you and yours, and in the meantime (and after) may you continue to draw pleasure and respite from beautiful music.

To CindyLover, Barry and Joe E,

Thank you once again for your kind words of consolation and encouragement. Believe me when I say they truly do help.

I hope my sentiments do not come across as self-pity. Trust me, that is the farthest thing from my mind. On the contrary, they are the feelings that every parent feels when their child is sick - you wish it was you so that you could take the pain away. I am optimistic that things will get better. One of my favorite sayings:

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, and sings the tunes without the words, and never stops at all."

Emily Dickinson
