Quartet Records is glad to present its new release

UN GENIO, DUE COMPARI, UN POLLO / SONNY & JED
Music Composed and Conducted by Ennio Morricone
Limited Edition of 500 units
Release date: 08/26/2014

Remastered reissue with two long out-of-print and hard-to-find Ennio Morricone pop comedy-western scores, composed during his final period of work in the genre.

Un genio, due compari, un pollo (aka The Genius, 1975) was produced by Morricone’s long-time partner Sergio Leone, directed by Damiano Damiani (L’isola di Arturo, Confessione di un commissario, Quien Sabe?) and starred Terence Hill and Miou-Miou. The score composed and conducted by Ennio Morricone is among one of his best efforts for the genre, full of different leitmotifs and themes, including the cue “Cavalcata…Per Elisa,” one of the most bizarre and remarkable pieces of music created by the Roman maestro.

La Banda J. & S. – Cronaca Criminale del Far West (aka Sonny & Jed, 1972), was directed by spaghetti-western maestro (and frequent Morricone collaborator) Sergio Corbucci (Il Mercenario, Il Grande Silenzio, Navajo Joe, I Crudeli) and starred Tomas Milian, Susan George and Telly Savalas. For this road-western about two outcast criminals running away from a bounty hunter, Morricone provided a short but consistently delightful score, dominated by a memorable main theme and featuring a beautiful love theme, played by the harmonica of Franco De Gemini.

Both scores have been previously issued on LP and CD (The Genius from the Hexacord label, and Sonny & Jed from Digitmovies), but each sold out quickly and has been out of print for years. Now, full remastered by Claudio Fuiano and Daniel Winkler from first-generation master tapes (courtesy of Sugar) these two essential westerns scores are reborn. The package includes a 16-page full color booklet with liner notes and a detailed cue-by-cue analysis by Randall D. Larson.

This title is available for order and shipping from now!. Please visit www.quartetrecords.com

"La Banda J& S" wasn't exactly out of print I guess: the digitmovies edition is currently on sale @intermezzo. I think both editions will share the same tracklisting.
...on the other hand, "Un Genio" was in my top 3 reissue wish-list .

Great pairing as well: both scores rank among my favourites Morricone westerns.

A great release, which you really can't pass up if you're a Morricone fan. I have a Japanese CD of Un Genio, but I might get this for Sonny & Jed, I have two cuts of that on a CAM western compilation CD. There's some really catchy stuff here, just listening to the clips will tell you that.

"La Banda J&S" is out of print from the label for years. If any retail have stock copies is another matter.

I stand corrected.
Intermezzo might have a hard time selling this one once your new edition is out. Unless you're a "Genio" hater :-)

I have both the previous Hexacord and Digitmovies editions (not speaking about the French RCA LP of The Genius) but I am glad that these scores are becoming available again, and even more in the high standard quality of the Quartet Records. Hope they will sell well!

They keep re-issuing these old chestnuts, while ignoring unreleased Morricone western titles like SEVEN GUNS FOR THE McGREGORS and SEVEN WOMEN FOR THE McGREGORS(only three cues available from both scores).

How about expanding FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE?

I'm sure if they were doable, they would have been released by now (esp. being Morricone). It could be anything, no tapes, legal problems or even Morricone saying no.

How about expanding FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE?

It would be nice if someone could explain why SEVEN GUNS FOR THE McGREGORS and SEVEN WOMEN FOR THE McGREGORS can't be released, but otherwise, I don't see a big difference between a re-issue and an expanded issue, especially some recent ones with just a few alternates. Still, I am not really into re-masters, mostly because every time they say "improved" sound, and I found that many times for Italian releases this is not really true (although I have no idea about that one, I'm sure Quartet have high standards). Of course I still view favourably the re-issue of out of print titles even if I already have them. In the last 3-4 years, it seems that labels are giving us the "final" edition of all Morricone soundtracks, with or without extra tracks, and it is kind of nice to check them off the list, assuming that it is all we are going to have.

To be fair, let's proceed carefully here in praising Italian releases from one label while questioning those from other labels: chances are Claudio Fuiano is the man behind ALL remasters :-)
I certainly trust the team of Claudio F. and Daniel W.

The Genius contains quite a lot of unreleased music (including a short but superb 'deguello' piece
for guitar, trumpet and choir) so it would have been nice with an expanded CD release. Oh well.

La Banda J. & S is essential Morricone as far as I'm concerned. The overall mood is fairly light and good-natured, but the standout track is Sweet Susan. It's a marvellous example of those even-paced, beguiling and perfectly melodic tracks that (for my money) help to put Ennio right at the top of the tree.

Examples of similar tracks, for reference, would be Chi Mai, Un Amico, After the Explosion and Un Ballo in Casa.

Quartet Records is glad to present its new release

And I'm glad to order it. Good one, Quartet! Especially looking forward to SONNY & JED which had been on my wishlist for years (literally ...). The double bill with GENIUS and its great cover art doesn't hurt either. razz Thanks!

The tapes with the recording session of The Genius are lost or destroy, nothing found in the Sugar or composer archives. The album version is the only available source. Sorry.

Thanks for the information. I wish we could have that for all the Morricone that haven't been expanded or are still unreleased. I think there is already some information about lost tapes, but it would be nice to compile it. In the range 1963-1975, I think that more than 50% of the soundtracks had their *final* release (by that I mean GDM, Quartet, Beat or Digitmovies edition) in the last few years.

That's bad news indeed but thanks for letting us know. Anyway, I do hope the masters for My Name is Nobody still exist though because I'd love to have a more complete CD, or why not a 2CD?, of this excellent western score.

What about an expanded "Il clan dei siciliani"?
