Here is an NPR piece on a new Peter Gunn album:

http://www.npr.org/2014/08/24/341703027/the-private-eye-who-made-cool-jazz-his-calling-card

The new recording uses Mancini's original arrangements. It is by the Harmonie Ensemble New York directed by Steven Richman.

Even before you posted this, I noted the NPR interview and put it on my to-listen-to list. Thanks for spreading the word. I just got two wonderful Gershwin/Grofe albums from this musical group, and am very much interested to hear what they've made of Mancini.

They should ask John Williams if he wants to return for the piano playing. It's been a long time since the last one, and God knows he needs the money! wink

I'm sure he'd love to. But someone else needs the money. smile

I wonder who else in the band (in addition to Williams) is left from the original two soundtrack albums of PETER GUNN.

Dick Nash, Ronnie Lang, Vince De Rosa, Bob Bain...

I just checked henrymancini.com and still no news about the 11-cd set that was mentioned in April.
Any rumors about the 11-cd set?

So quite a gang, then.

Get 'em all back, that's what I say.

Sadly it looks like another lost opportunity.
If this UK November release is the same mooted collection, it seems to have lost 2 discs and treads familiar ground - if true, a real shame for us fans who were hoping for something a bit more thoughtful and fresh.
Amazon.co.uk shows it as a Sony release

Well, I hope that our boutique labels will release "something a bit more thoughtful and fresh" - they just know how to do it.
And I'll probably get this multi-disc edition - this LPs re-recordings are pure classic, some of them are OOP, so as I don't have any of this album in my collection, this will be great deal for me!

The only tracks that haven't been released on CD before is the "Me, Natalie" soundtrack and Fran Jefferies performing "It Had Better Be Tonight" . Lola Albright's recording of "Dreamsville" is from her Columbia LP/CD that Mancini arranged and conducted. There were other "Peter Gunn" themes with added lyrics (some by Sammy Cahn) on this album. "Brief and Breezy", "Soft Sounds" "Slow and Easy", "Straight To Baby"(originally "Session At Pete's Pad") and "Sorta Blue" would have been nice additions to this set.
I don't know if I would purchase this just for the "Me, Natalie" tracks and Fran Jefferies.

MMTV:

Thanks for the link.
Some of those in the new set are reruns from previous releases I already have (Lola Albright, Johnny Mathis versions, etc.), but this collection offers remasters of the reruns and DARLING LILI, TWO FOR THE ROAD, etc. that I've been waiting for in separate releases.....I'll take what I can get.

Sorry to derail this thread about a Mancini box set of stuff we already have, but this may be of tangential interest:
