For the films, definitely Wyatt Earp. It's my favourite James Newton Howard score, too - but I do marginally prefer Tombstone's score.

For me, the Broughton music for TOMBSTONE is superior - one of the best things he's done and a true addition to the great tradition of music for westerns. It is Americana. I did like what JNH did for WYATT EARP, some nice moments in there. The broader spectrum calls, and - since someone in the thread already alluded to it - HOUR OF THE GUN surely appeals as the best film to deal with the subject, and has the best score of all. - JMM.

It's TOMBSTONE and BRUCE BROUGHTON all the way for me. The Cosmatos/Russell film is miles better than the Kasdan/Costner one (Silverado is the best western Kasdan ever made and Broughton's score for that one trumps both Tombstone and Wyatt Earp in my book). The Costner one is just too long (and at times, boring) and I don't care as much for the characters. Everything about the Russell one shines brighter for me. The editing, photography, acting, scoring, aggression and tension. I do like many parts of the JNH score, but also don't consider it above many other efforts by him. Jesus Kev, are we watching the same films? Sorry Thomas, I like "Tombstone" more too--for many of the same reasons as Kev. And that's taking into consideration that Costner, by necessity, had to make a longer film that told a more all-rounded story of the man than just focusing on one specific event the way that "Tombstone" did. I like Costner's movie, don't get me wrong. Just slightly less. It may have something to do with the slightly underhanded way Costner tried to block Russell's movie from release. If the tales are true, then I respect Costner-the-man a little less. But I can still appreciate that "Wyatt Earp" is a fine film on its own.
