The Daily Post brings happy news that one of the creators of the iconic Yeti that terrorized a nations children in the 1960s has been found after The Odeon cinema at Eagles Meadow in Wrexham put out a call in an effort to trace anybody who played a role in the programmes shoot for the Patrick Troughton classic The Abominable Snowmen in Gwynedd nearly 50 years ago.

Sylvia James, a mother-of-two and grandmother-of-four from Sunbury-on-Thames, Middlesex, worked as a key part of the production team on the series and tells how the creatures came into being:

“They were huge costumes. In Wales we were constantly looking out for the rain, and if it started we would have to rush indoors because the Yeti costumes were really hard to dry out, I absolutely loved it in North Wales because the scenery was beautiful. We had long days filming. We filmed for 17 hours straight on one day because we wanted to get it made while the weather was good. So we just got on with it.”
Sylvia had a prolific run on the series, working as a junior artist during the Hartnell era and the as lead artist from The Abominable Snowmen to The War Games throughout the Troughton era.

She returned to the series to head the make-up department for The Curse of Peladon and The Sea Devils before working on every episode from The Ark in Space to Terror of the Zygons (except for Revenge of the Cybermen). One of her other lasting legacies on the series was the prosthetic she designed for Michael Wisher’s Davros.

“It was a great show to work on because it was a lot of fun and it felt like we were one big family. We all got on really well. I worked a lot with the people in costume and the people doing the special effects. We made moulds of people’s faces and would use them to make masks. They were usually very reptilian.”
It is unknown whether Sylvia will be taking up the Odeon offer of free tickets to this Saturday’s Deep Breath screening.

In somewhat related news, Jamie McCrimmon actor Frazer Hines has been cast in Starz Outlander according to reports.

Frazer will portray Sir Fletcher Gordon, the governor of Wentworth Prison, in the series which was recently commissioned for a second series.

Author Diana Gabaldon announced the casting at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, saying:

“He is a lovely guy and I am really pleased”
The writer also revealed named how Jamie had inspired the series in the first place after she saw him in a kilt, the male lead in the series Jamie Fraser being named after both the actor and character!

Frazer’s episode will be part of the second half of Series 1, premiering early next year 2015.
