Starting at 18:15 in this interview with Robin Williams on INSIDE THE ACTOR'S STUDIO, Robin talks about his time at Juilliard School and remembering dance instructor Anna Sokolow. Anna was a choreographer who worked with and was partners with Alex North in Russia in the 1930's.

Interesting that years later, Alex North would provide the brief yet beautiful music score for the Robin Williams movie GOOD MORNING VIETNAM.

Here at 18:15 talks about going to Juilliard School and hilariously about Anna after a quick funny bit mentioning his life long friend Christopher Reeve, who he met at Juilliard School:

The Dance Unit

Anna Sokolow’s company, the Dance Unit, performed repertory reflecting her social concerns. She created Homage to Lenin (1933), and in 1934, she was invited with her partner, composer Alex North (1910–1991), to visit the Soviet Union. Disillusioned, she wrote, “It was provoking to find that in a country with the most advanced political ideas in the world, the most modern experimental theatre, with unsurpassed cinema, they still cling so tenaciously to this [balletic] dance form.”

Anna Sokolow and Alex North in Russia, ca. 1934.

Rest in Peace Alex, Anna and Robin.

It seems Alex and Anna were romantic as well as professional partners, but never married.

There's a very good movie in there somewhere I think! Two very passionate artists!

A Tribute to Anna Sokolow:
