Hi all,
So I'm waiting for a shipment from a company that I ordered from in Japan and it's getting to the point where it's been more than a reasonable amount of time, even accounting for the possibility of customs and Canada Post's normal sluggishness, for the package to get here.

I've emailed the firm and been told that the shipment's been sent out as a non-registered light parcel. To be clear, I don't think that the company has done anything wrong. I've ordered from them in the past and parcels have arrived just fine and I don't want to turn this into a bitch about company X's issues thread. I suspect it's simply been lost in the mail as sometimes happens.

My question is this: I know that in North America, it's the seller's responsibility if shipments don't arrive. They have to re-send the package or give a refund. Is this also the case generally internationally, and specifically with Japan? I ask because I honestly don't know and I'd like to know my rights as a buyer before I email them asking for a refund.

Thanks for your responses!

Chris

Did you buy this from them via eBay, or just through their website? Personally, I'm not aware of any all-encompassing legislation or policy (unless it was through eBay, whose policies apply to everyone equally, regardless of country of residence) that spells out a buyer's rights, whether in North America or Internationally. Individual countries tend to enact Consumer Protection Acts/etc., but I don't think they hold any water when dealing with companies in other regions. That other country's laws and/or the policies of the specific company you're dealing with are going to take precedence (usually international shipping policies are spelled out on a company's website in pretty plain site).

Personally, I've yet to find sellers more reliable than any of those I've dealt with in Japan. They're by far the most courteous and reliable. So I'm sure, if you don't receive the package, they'll be willing to send it again (provided the contents weren't worth a huge amount of money, in which case it was unwise to send it unregistered). But how long as it really been? Unless it was sent EMS (which I've received from Japan in just 2 days in the past), it could take quite a while... and unregistered, depending on the size, it could easily take a month or more depending on the timing of flights and the mood the customs people are in at the moment.

Thanks for the input, Megatron. I bought it via their website and It's been about 8 weeks. I'll give it another 2 and then ask about reimbursement.

Just a comment on the transit time, if I might add some insight. I occasionally purchase CDs from a Chinese record label, who by default sends all packages via registered mail. Usually, it's not uncommon for me to wait 8-10 weeks even from there and with a registered parcel. I was pretty panicked the first time I ordered from them years ago, but have come to expect that kind of wait time.
