David Newman is composing the music for the upcoming drama Ruth & Alex. The movie is directed by Richard Loncraine and stars Morgan Freeman, Diane Keaton, Michael Cristofer, Cynthia Nixon, Claire Vanderboom, Korey Jackson, Carrie Preston, Sterling Jerins, Josh Pais and Miriam Shor. The film follows a long-married couple during an eventful weekend after they are forced to contemplate selling their beloved Brooklyn apartment.

This film may not get a wide release, but it's gratifying that Newman is getting to work on something with a bit of dramatic heft to it.

According to IMDB the movie is called LIFE ITSELF and there is no composer mentioned so far.
Sounds like an interesting project for Newman. Definetely more interesting than stuff like BEHAVING BADLY.

Got back from the film. Freeman and Keaton are very good, even if they're not exactly challenged by the material. I also liked Cynthia Nixon and the New York location shooting. As someone once said of THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, it's a movie your mom would like.
Newman's score is a piano and strings with occasional acoustic guitar affair; if I had to name a similar score, I'd compare it to NEVER BEEN KISSED.
Hardly an outstanding movie, but as long as Newman is scoring something that doesn't have the words 'Big Mommas', 'Christmas Story 2' or 'Squeakquel' in the title, I'm good.
A pleasant score but not very memorable.

I really like his Never Been Kissed score.
