My first thought was, "well, everyone needs a hobby".
But when you get down to the nitty-gritty, this guy's psychological problems run pretty deep. Though it's open to debate, I believe most people buy music because the music itself gives them pleasure. This guy seems to get that same pleasure from the act of collecting itself. A type of hoarding. And I guess it need not have been vinyl--it could have been cars or paintings or books or what-have-you.
When one has acquired more items than they can ever possibly have the time to enjoy, that's when it has crossed the line to obsession or neurotic compulsion. I also believe that we all have that inside of us, but generally it's just a matter of varying degrees.
Not to mention that the money he spends could be used for far more constructive or productive purposes but then--hey, it's his money.
