Just came across my copy of Varese's 1998 original soundtrack CD of this fabulous Raksin score. What a treat. If some of you who came later to the Golden Age club missed this one - hunt it down!

I LOVE the New Philharmonia/RCA recording Raksin did of a long suite for this score, kept forgetting to get the Varese, tried once in a trade on this board, but it got lost or something. Still curious to hear the film tracks one of these days!
I always used to wish concert conductors would (and could!) program that suite right alongside Beethoven, Shostakovich, et al.

Another one of those "I passed it by when it was on the used shelf once, and now thoroughly regretting it."

I envy you, Mr. Faiola (and maybe in more ways than just this cd! smile )

A lovely, lovely score. Really deserves to be a popular favorite, but alas was not a big seller at the time. Can't figure that one out.

If you can't find a copy of the original tracks, the rerecording conducted by Raksin has been remastered sans Dolby and sounds appropriately monumental. It's also very reasonably priced.

David,

If you ever find that Varese CD of FOREVER AMBER at a modest price, get it. I too just happened to yank this one off the shelf last week and listened to it again for the first time in years. As much as I like the RCA re-recording, the original tracks have an immediacy about them that is quite incredible.

$15 from Moviemars. They are totally reliable. Not a bad deal!

Thi is but half of the score. I know we will never get an expanded. I keep hoping twilight time will put this on blu with a music only track. A truly awesome score.

And there's more music on the CD, in one section at least, than there is in the film, itself.

The ending, in which we see that Amber is getting ready for a meeting with her next protector, less influential, but still helpful, was cut significantly enough to indicate that Amber was feeling more punished for her decision to let her son go with Cornel Wilde. In those days, "bad" girls had to be punished, in the media at least.

But, the music for that sequence can still be heard, on both recordings listed here.

FOREVER AMBER is not a great film, but it is well-made and performed, in a style no longer possible nowadays.

Not only would I like an expanded music release, but would also enjoy seeing the film as it was originally meant to be seen.

Can't find on sae. Maybe made mistake looking at DVD but could have sworn there.

Moviemars web site no longer carries. Oddly moviemars selling on eBay at same price 2 copies though charging shipping. Moviemars web site shipping was free. Still worth it and snagged a copy. At least one left.

What is deal with moviemars? Bought on eBay. They cancelled the order by refunding 10 days later(today). I order a used copy on amazon and guess what appears. Moviemars selling a new copy slightly higher price on amazon.Doesn't this violate eBay? rules????

For a 1947 recording (2 years before my birthday!) the sound is astonishing! And it is Stereo. Better element preservation than many things I've heard from the 60's and 70's! Seeing this today I pulled it out for a spin - hadn't listened to this one in ages (symptom of having too many CD's....).

It'd be nice if one of the labels -- LaLa Land, Kritzerland -- that have sprung up in the years since Varese issued "Amber" would release the rest of the score that Varese declined to.

Thank you Ray for starting this post - it persuaded me to obtain a copy immediately. Raksin is a composer that, shamefully, I have somewhat disregarded. So this recording has brought me up very short!. It is an absolute GEM, - an complete revelation. And what an exquisite performance by the ever reliable Alfred. Thank you so much!

Raksin's "Forever Amber" is a glorious achievement, a flat-out masterpiece whose position in my all-time Top-10 list is solidified.
