This new work is called "Lyric Suite: The Floods of Avon" for string quartet, string orchestra, and piano.

Big spring again for Goldenthal. There seemed to have been speciulation that he'd be doing Michael Mann's CYBER (Blackhat) but I gather that he's glad he stayed away from that one. But last spring he released two albums and premiered his Symphony in G# Minor in Orange County.

This spring there's the world premiere of the Lyric Suite, this new Anne Hathaway one-woman show, and his ballet at the Met Opera house. As always, I'm glad to be around NYC.

By pure luck I will be in NYC that week - thanks for the heads up!

Anyone going to this? I can't wait! And only $15 are you kidding me? And I just saw they are doing Philip Glass's second symphony near me in Providence RI in a couple weeks. Good month for me and my favorite composers.

Regrettably, I have to leave New York on the 9th, so I will just be missing this. Still, anyone who is going, please post a full report here - am incredibly curious about this piece (whenever I see the title "Lyric Suite," I think first of Berg, so I'll be fascinated to hear about Goldenthal's work).

I am, however, seeing a concert at Le Poisson Rouge tomorrow evening, so there's that slight bit of synchronicity. Anyway, this should be a wonderful evening, and anyone who can go, should go (if only because I won't be able to)!

I thought the piece was really good, as were the young musicians who performed it. I hope it gets a recording some day. It was cool to see Elliot, Julie Taymor and John Mauceri in attendance too.

I loved it...it sort of started with a haze in string clusters...then it took off with the first of two (?) main themes, one sort of dramatic and the other sort of very English countryside...there was lots of exciting stuff and string techniques, but really about showing off these two or three beautiful melodies before the haze came back. It was like drifting through the clouds and seeing an English village, then fading back through the clouds. It was like 15 minutes. I hope it gets a recording.

Wow. Thanks for the descriptions. VERY tantalizing. I hope it gets some sort of recording. The titles are already piling up!

I had once the fortune of hearing the 2nd symphony performed live in London and you're in for a treat: the complex strands of the string writing, especially the finale, are SO much better heard live than in the cd (when played with panache of course, otherwise they come out as a messy)
