LOVE THEME from THE SPECIALIST
(Did You Call Me? Music: John Barry/ Lyric: Terry Walstrom)

In the twilight, as the moon comes around
from the shadows there's an alluring sound
when the phone rings
that alone brings
every memory we made from Barry's music we played.
**
Then I'd hold you as we danced through the night
And I told you everything was all right
Your eyes glistened
while you listened
As the melody played we kissed and our bodies swayed.
**
Will you leave me? Will you call me?
No, I won't let hope befall me!
When the sunrise brings tomorrow
You may kiss me goodnight, but will you call me?
**
Oh, I saw your . . . every move that you made
As a voyeur; watched the games that you played
So revealing, how the feeling
Swept me up in this dream, and drew me into your scheme
Yeah, come what may
**
(Instrumental interlude)
***
As I follow where you lead me,
Am I hoping you will need me?
Will the music still enthrall me?
Yes, you gave love last night, but Did you call me?
**
Yes, I saw your . . . every move that you made
As a voyeur; watched the games that you played
So revealing, how this feeling
Captivated my heart, but will it tear me apart
Did you call me?

I think THE SPECIALIST suite on the Barry/Royal Philharmonic album MOVIOLA II: ACTION AND ADVENTURE, was excellent. Better than the original score.

I offer the following take on the subject. In view of the sentiments expressed, the original tempo is too slow, and so this version should be accompanied by an LP version of the instrumental but played at 45 rpm.

Did you call me?
No, I turned off my phone.
You enthrall me!
Look, just leave me alone.
Are we talking?
No you’re stalking…
And it really must stop, you know my cousin’s a cop.

Did you call me?
No, my battery’s dead.
Reinstall me!
Get this into your head –
You disgust me, and it must be
That I’m leaving because
your ring tone’s not what it was.

And I’m thinking
I’ll de-friend you…
Come off LinkedIn
That should end you.

No more Snapchat,
No more “text me”
No more hearting on Facebook, ‘cos you vexed me.

Shall I call you?
We can set this thing straight.

No, we’re all through,
And I’m dumping you, mate.
No more hoo-rays, keep my blurays
You’re a Nokia guy, but mine’s a phone with an i
It just won’t do.

(Though the apps work
And the screen’s on
Your reception was poor
And…all…your…charge…has…gone.)

I'm curious who Barry's lyricst was for THE SECRETS OF ROME
from the SOPHIA LOREN IN ROME album

or

IS THIS THE SONG WE'LL BE SINGING TOMORROW?

The weirdest lyric I have seen for a Barry tune is I DIED LAST NIGHT (theme from Petulia)

DID YOU CALL ME
is probably something Diana Krall could sing pretty well, but who knows?

I like TG's version best!

I'd play the CD more if it had that version on smile

I don't recall seeing any lyricist credit on my copies of these, sadly.

On the other hand, the notes for the original Varese twin-pack of Games of Death (from which this songs hails) and Night Games stated that this song was Barry's one and only lyric-writing credit.

I don't know this one; it's not in the soundtrack release from FSM. Can you tell us any more about it? Was it ever recorded, and, if so, is it available anywhere?

Stephen Woolston wrote:
I don't think there were any lyrics.

It wouldn't surprise me if JB wrote the piece with a possible song in mind. That would be fitting with JB's form.

I would judge "Somewhere in Time" and "Across the Sea of Time" as examples of this; the main theme for each just happens to fit the title phrase perfectly.

Indeed, TWO sets of lyrics have been written for the former. smile

Thanks, Kev. You're clearly, like me, an incurable romantic!

That's interesting. I always assumed Barry wrote the lyrics for the former two songs as well. Obviously that's not correct. I'm intrigued to find out who did now.

I have never heard of this song or film so I decided to waddle over to the YouTubes to give it a listen.

The video has images of Sylvester Stallone naked. I bailed after a few seconds.

There is one way to ruin a song! What a way to start the day...

He's dead?

I hope so, otherwise someone else's ashes were scattered in the Atlantic.
