Not sure if this has already been discussed, but THE GODFATHER will be screened with live orchestral accompaniment of Rota's score at the Nokia Theatre (Los Angeles) - January 24, 2015. Tickets went on sale yesterday.
I love this film. I love this score. But this seems a strange choice for this sort of presentation.
The film is just under three hours long, but there can't be more than forty minutes of music in it (if that), not counting source pieces (which I can't imagine would be performed live). Won't the orchestra just be sitting there for long stretches? And even when the music comes up, it's rarely the sort of broad scoring that competes with the picture. Feels like it'll be a distraction to me.
That said, anything that promotes film music, Nino Rota, and "The Godfather" can't be all bad.

Admittedly, it's not the obvious choice. Though I'll bet the sustained suspense cues like "Michael and Solozzo riding to Jack Dempsey's" and "Michael in the Hospital" will be great with a live orchestra.
