O.K. Krull-ites, here's your chance to help a fellow score devotee.

Tell me, please, whether the sound and comprehensiveness of the La-La Land CD represents enough of a reason to forsake my 1992 Soundtrack Collector's Special Edition.

Back in the day, the SCSE release was an unbelievable expansion that augured for the future expansions of monumental scores we all take for granted today. Something of a trailblazer, it was.

Back before Mike Matessino got to produce comprehensive releases of THE STAR WARS TRILOGY scores for the special edition release, there was a time when this and a tiny set of other SCSE releases (such as DRAGONSLAYER) was as cutting edge as it got for retrospective score expansions.

So, has the SCSE of Krull been obviated by the La-La Land, or does the SCSE hold up well enough to keep me spinning and ripping it? Your thoughts appreciated.

I only own the La-la Land and like it! I saw that previous edition (it was a clamshell right?) in a store but it was way over priced, back then probably OOP.

Your question has already been asked, might find this helpful:

Yes, the question has been asked, but not answered to any significant depth. Details!

I'm not sure if Krull was recorded in analog or digital.
Based on most modern remasterings, um....the newer releases may sound a little better because they have been modernized; made louder and maybe re equalized. So certain details may be more audible than before, at the sacrifice of realism. The SCSE release though may sound more natural and analog with greater dynamic range as usual with stuff recorded in the 80s.
I appreciate that they didn't make the originals 2 CDs, even the 77 min version was over kill, The essential 40 min release was just about right as far a proper presentation and listening experience goes...it could have used maybe 10 mins more....

That's my feeling, Projectionist. The SCSE seems to have all the essential cues and sound quality exceeding the original Southern Cross CD release.

I'm really anxious for information on any additional cues beyond the SCSE disc, and especially whether the La-La Land sound seems to be a radical sonic upgrade.

Krull is a score that I don’t mind having all of. I never consider it too much or too long. It holds my attention for the full run. It falls solidly in the “they don’t make them like that anymore” category.

I have the old 2CD edition and I’ve been very happy with it. But I can’t imagine the LLL release is anything less than wonderful.

The original sdtk by Southern Cross didn't have the opening credit cue unfortunatley......

I'm just trying to get a sense if the La-La Land is enough of an improvement over the SCSE to seek it out secondhand.

Is the effort to track down and pry loose from its current owner equivalent to the sonic and content improvements of the La-La Land?

Or are the differences a wash, and I should be happy with what I've got?

Ford A. Thaxton: a producer and a gentleman...though some on this board may disagree.

Check with your physician for the proper dosage.

In my humble honeest opinion, the upgrade is worth every penny...

The LaLaLand is less punchy, but there's more detail you can hear and enjoy (and Krull is not a score lacking in detail!)

The expansion prior to has a mix that muddles some of the finer points of the music, but the music is far more in your face.

Personally I think the LaLaLand is vastly superior to anything else, but that's my own taste. Though I do wish the Love Theme concert suite was placed at the CD break instead of at the end of the score because it breaks up the flow of the music quite wonderfully. But you can program it that way if you so choose.

Now if you want a real experience, go out to iTunes and pick up Zoe Poledouris singing "In Each Other's Eyes," the abandoned sung version of the Krull love theme. Now that's a trip!

I have all 3 editions and I personally like the LLL release the most. There is indeed more detail and the sound is crisper than in the previous releases.

That would be over eight-thousand pennies, according to Amazon.com.

Is it really eight-thousand pennies worth of upgrade?

Same here, I do have the STCE 2CD release and am quite happy with it. Never felt the need to upgrade, but I'm sure the LLL release is excellent as well. I do also have the original vinyl.

If there's a consensus emerging here, it seems to be: either is good...both are better.

I think I'll go with both.

Interestingly, the more “modern” remaster of this title goes for detail over punch, which is the opposite of how that usually happens…

I prefer the La-La Land edition because of said detail, but the blazes of brass do sound nice on the SuperTracks edition. This is a score I much prefer in its complete form (I find “Vella” essential, for example).

Most definitely... this score is considerably better rounded in its full form. The vinyl plays like a mere "suite" in comparison.

It's one of the most complex, stirring, engaging, rapturous, heroic, blazingly brilliant scores ever written. There's no good reason NOT to own the complete score - This is a case where each and every cue has something special and intriguing to offer.
