Buffalo Bill The Ox-Bow Incident - best Red River She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Tall in the Saddle The Treasure of Sierra Madre Obviously, I'm not much of a Westerns aficionado. If we have threads on 1940s noir and musicals, I'll be more enthusiastic!

Actually "The Treasure of Sierra Madre" isn't a western, technically speaking. It's actually a 'morality play' and an appropriation of "The Pardoner's Tale" by Chaucer. (I taught it for matriculation English - the Chaucer that is.) True, it's considered more of an adventure tale than a western, but I was desperate to fill out my paltry list. lol

The 1940s were a decade of western musicals, hour-long formula programmers, and serious A-list western epics made by the best directors and writers in Hollywood who pushed the boundaries of the genre to new heights. I count a decade from 1 to 10 with the first year, in this case, being 1941 and the last year of the decade being the transition year, in this case 1950. A remarkable year, 1950 ended the decade with several superior, adult westerns: 1950 Winchester '73 -- directed by Anthony Mann. 1950 Wagon Master -- written by Frank S. Nugent, directed by John Ford. 1950 The Gunfighter -- directed by Henry King. 1950 The Furies -- directed by Anthony Mann. 1950 Devil's Doorway -- written by Guy Trosper, directed by Anthony Mann. 1950 Broken Arrow -- directed by Delmer Daves. 1950 Branded -- directed by Rudolph Maté . 1950 Ambush -- written by Luke Short, directed by Sam Wood. 1949 She Wore a Yellow Ribbon -- written by Frank S. Nugent, directed by John Ford. 1949 Lust For Gold -- directed by S. Sylvan Simon. 1949 Colorado Territory -- directed by Raoul Walsh. 1948 Three Godfathers -- directed by John Ford. 1948 Red River -- Borden Chase story directed by Howard Hawks. 1948 Four Faces West -- directed by Alfred E. Green. 1948 Fort Apache -- written by Frank S. Nugent, directed by John Ford. 1948 Coroner Creek -- directed by Ray Enright. 1948 Blood On the Moon -- written by Luke Short, directed by Robert Wise. 1947 Sea of Grass -- directed by Elia Kazan. 1947 Ramrod -- written by Luke Short, directed by Andre deToth. 1947 Pursued -- directed by Raoul Walsh. 1947 Gunfighters -- directed by George Waggner. 1947 Angel and the Badman -- written and directed by James Edward Grant. 1946 My Darling Clementine -- directed by John Ford. 1946 Duel In the Sun -- directed by Victor Fleming. 1944 Tall In the Saddle -- directed by Edwin L. Marin. 1943 The Ox-Bow Incident -- directed by William A. Wellmann 1942 The Spoilers -- Rex Beach remake with John Wayne directed by Ray Enright. 1941 Western Union -- the Zane Grey story directed by Fritz Lang. 1941 They Died With Their Boots On -- directed by Raoul Walsh.
