I've been trying to find this film for many years since I saw a couple of clips from it. I've never seen the film and think it's just unavailable in The United States. There was an old video tape for sale for the British PAL system at Amazon, but nothing else. A friend mentioned it was shown on Turner's TNT (or something like that), some time ago. Anybody out there (Ray?) have any info on this film? Thanks.

I want to see this for the viewpoint on worker's rights, and, (for those who like that sort of thing), not for the spectacle of Italian Women wrestling each other in the mud. But that's a given.

I can't vouch for the video or audio quality, and you'll need an all-region player to play the European disc, but there's a fairly inexpensive DVD available from Amazon.co.uk:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B000YBQNYW/ref=sr_1_1_olp?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1406271579&sr=1-1&keywords=bitter+rice&condition=new

The same edition is available from Amazon.it for even less:

http://www.amazon.it/Riso-Amaro-Vittorio-Gassman/dp/B000YBQNYW/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1406271745&sr=1-1&keywords=riso+amaro

Many thanks for my sole response, General Allenby. I do not have one of those players but it was interesting to see how the Italian version of Amazon works, my Italian is passable. But for such an old film, I'm concerned about the quality of the image and sound, as you mentioned. I appreciate your help; however I'll just wait for Criterion to 'work their magic' on the film someday.

Hi Montana Dave.....

I believe I can supply your request.

BITTER RICE ran on TCM in 2011, and I checked my video holdings yesterday and found that I had burned a DVDr of the title. I scanned through my copy, it is in Italian with English subtitles, and appears to be complete and of quite good visual and sound quality. I've never watched it completely, but it looks like a well-made film for post-war Italy, with very strong performances.

I'm in the middle of doing other projects, so I won't get to it immediately, but if you would
find the personal profile of my friend John B. Archibald on this site, open it and copy down his eMail address, then send him an eMail with your contact information---eMail and address---and a short note reminding him of what you are requesting of me, he will contact me with the information.

I understand you will be going into hospital for surgery soon, so send this information immediately and when you are out and recuperating, it will soon be on your doorstep and this will be a nice way to spend some viewing hours.

Sending you Good Wishes on your surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Manderley.
