I received my copy of 'Exorcist III' last night and viewed it in the dark. Honestly, I only recalled the 'person who moves' (the old lady on the ceiling). Everthing about the film was absolutely fresh to me, I didn't even recall how it ended it was so long ago. I absolutely LOVED this film! The gore (for the most part) was left to the imagination. You know what's under the sheets at the crime scenes of the covered corpses, the facial registration of the person looking is all you need to know. I really liked that. Now of course from all the previous talk about the nurses station scene, I kept waiting for it. The nurses station is shown so many times, when the horror streaked out of an open door - I jumped in my chair! Terrific use of shadows and dark corners of rooms. The sound design was superb, so much of the suspense was attributable to sounds from elements we could not see. George C. Scott may have overacted a bit here and there, but his professionalism was a major asset to the film. And when the original Damien Karras showed up in the cell.... RENT THIS MOVIE FOLKS!
So many great moments already mentioned - not going to go back over them....but permit me to add a shocking moment or two....such as the 'hostage tape' from The Dark Knight - specifically the "Look at me!!!!" moment...I mean, just....f***....in what is generally quite an overrated movie, that tape - and that particular moment - are friggin' terrifying...
....and I well remember literally jumping out of my seat at 'the jump' moment from Cronenberg's The Fly....wonderfully frightening moment....
....and, although it's another movie I find a little overrated, the 'lawnmower moment' from Sinister....timed and filmed to absolute perfection....

Did I miss it, or has no one mentioned the ending of De Palma's CARRIE yet? Perhaps it doesn't seem scary now because it's been imitated so many times (not least by De Palma himself), but it had quite an impact in its day. And the edit on Donaggio's score is even more abrupt in the film cut than on any of the various soundtrack releases.
I once showed THE TENANT to a group of friends starting around midnight and when it was over they refused to leave my house until daylight. I show it occasionally in my Intro to Film course but it doesn't seem to have the same impact in a classroom setting.
If we include TV in this thread then mention must be made of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode "An Unlocked Window" (with Bernard Herrmann music) and the Night Gallery episode "The Caterpillar".

I did and have been doing exactly that and only get what it looks like in my post above. Saw elsewhere that some folks are having the same issue. I'm on a Mac and no idea if that's the greater issue?
