It's not as captivating as some of Trapanese's previous work, but there's enough highlight tracks to make this a favourite of the year for me. If anything the found footage style probably hurt it, and too much competition out there. As far as the money side, that was a really cheap picture at $13 million, and in the US $25 million box office. It only needs about 10 million or so to pay the distributors and come out in the black. The first half of the film was very clearly temp-tracked with ALIENS, and the finale was also obviously temp-tracked with SIGNS, but it's still an enjoyable listen, with a great main theme.
