It was 13 years ago today MR James Bernard left us , JULY 12, 2001.A fine composer who never really got the fame and credit he probably deserved. But short of doing OPERA[in humble manner didn't reach for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA,62] his diversity of giving us music for films and if need be away from the films was great. Great mood themes and motifs, marches, waltzes, and what I loved about his music the most, impeccable beautiful themes when called for.If there is a regret about his life in music it surely was not what he gave us, but how much more he could have given us. I am sure he could have been prolific, but it turn out his output was not.More genre films with lovely themes, love stories he never did with beautiful music, on and on. Oh yes a John Barry he could have been. But what he gave us was fine and in the tragic life he lived I hope the God's are giving him a nice justice. Somewhere over the rainbow may he be giving others more wonderful music R.I.P JAMES, YOU DESERVE IT.

Yes. He was a fine purveyor of musical accompaniement for many a Hammer classic, but he should have been way up there with the best and the brightest. An underated talent. RIP Mr. Bernard.

I think his parting shot, NOSFERATU, was one of his greatest scores. He left us on a triumphant high note.

Has it really been 13 years? Here in Hollywood, I had the pleasure of meeting him through some mutual friends during his last years. He gave me an autographed piece of sheet music on which he'd jotted down his DRACULA theme. He was a lovely, lovely man. Perhaps you know something I don't know, but he certainly didn't have the air about him of a man whose life has been tragic. We could have wished more years for him and more scores for ourselves, but what counts is the years he did enjoy and the music we likewise enjoy.

Thanks for remembering him with this thread. It's brought back happy memories of the man and his music.

I met and communicated by mail with Mr. Bernard the last years of his life. What a fine gentleman and kind soul. His unique musical voice will never be replaced. Let's all hope for a new recording of "The Curse Of Frankenstein" and "Horror Of Dracula"!!!!
God Bless, James!

I don't think dan really meant that James Bernard had led "a tragic life". There were the tragic moments which everyone experiences, and in this case one particularly horrific and dramatic one, but, like Peter Cushing, he was always genuinely grateful to the people who got enjoyment out of what he did, and happy to have been able to give pleasure to so many through doing something he loved.

Anyway, it's nice to remember such a wonderful human being (and splendid composer) at this time.

TO GRAHAM- Thanks, yes there is no need to go into detail, unless one cares to, I mention the word tragic because of a terrible incident with his lifetime soul mate in Jamaica who I believe died in a tragic violent manner. Which understandably altered the later years in his life.
