MovieScore Media presents

Coherence (Kristin Øhrn Dyrud)

http://moviescoremedia.com/coherence-kristin-ohrn-dyrud/

MovieScore Media tackles another exciting and experimental science fiction score with Coherence, written by Norwegian-born composer Kristin Øhrn Dyrud. Written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, Coherence is an independent science-fiction / relationship drama, focusing on the life of eight people caught up in the aftermath of an astronomical anomaly. The story takes place during a single night when a comet arrives to Earth with staggering consequences: glasses break in, cellphones shatter and even the power goes off in all but one house in the street. As the unusual circumstances bring out the buried issues among the eight friends gathered for a dinner party, .

Kristin Øhrn Dyrud is a Norwegian composer living and working in LA. She wrote her first composition entitled “Chinese Dance” at the age of five which already showed her early fascination with Oriental culture. Kristin graduated from the USC film scoring program in 2005 and had scored a number of films since then: her Music for The Attic Door won the award of Best Film Score at the Bend Film Festival. She regularly works on commercials with HUM Music and arranged the currently used version of the Jeopardyopening theme. Her music for Coherence is her first commercial soundtrack release.

Awesome. I'm delighted to see her get her first feature and soundtrack release.

According to imdb she has done several features before.

I listened to the clips on amazon. Extremely dark ambient, I would call it. Not exactly easy on the ear but I guess it fits the film.

No, I think this is her first feature film as composer, but she may have been involved in other films previously, in some capacity.

She had a blog at montages.no once, but it seems to have been taken down.

What about The Attic Door, Empty Fuller, Finding Madison, Alien Game and Pieces Of Eight?

I'm not sure what they are, or what her involvement is.

I found her blog, btw:

If you go to her October 1, 2012 entry, you can see that she speaks about COHERENCE as her first film (not by name, but by director).

She says she's got a feature, not her FIRST feature, as far as I can tell.

Yeah, but I'm fairly confident it is. In fact, I do seem to vaguely remember talking with her about it when she got that assignment. I could be wrong, since I don't know every detail of her resume, but I'm 99% sure. I can ask her again, if you want 100% confirmation.

Either way, let's hope she'll get more assignments and more opportunities to release a soundtrack.

I can ask her myself.

You don't have to; I just asked her. Let's see what she says.

OK, so this is what she said:

She has indeed done feature-length films before, but this was the first with THEATRICAL release.

Yeah. I interpreted her first theatrical release as first feature film release.

Changing the subject back to the music, this is a very nice atmospheric and moody score, often it is haunting and un-nerving. Fans of Micah Levi's Under the Skin might be attracted to this one. Great work by Ms. Øhrn Dyrud, and I look forward to her future work.

I'm looking forward to this film. This score was an instant add to my Spotify playlist and I'm looking forward to purchasing the damn thing soon enough.
