We've just discovered 'West Wing' via Netflix - and although Walden's music is very Thomas Newman-like, I still wouldn't mind having some. Have these scores ever been released? Grateful for any input.

I'm watching Friday Night Lights on netflix these days and I'm constantly thinking how much I'd like the score for this show.

A nice CD collection of Snuffy Walden's tv themes, "Music by WG Snuffy Walden", contains the two West Wing tracks. It's out of print, but avaliable used (inexpensively too!), here:

You did indeed. I didn't look closely at your link. My bad, and my apologies...

I'd buy a West Wing album in an instant. Much of the episode scores are fairly similar, but every so often there is a standout. A particular favorite of mine is from the second season episode "Galileo." Walden introduces a new, wistful, longing melody that's used when the characters are talking about the new probe that's about to land on Mars and what it means for the future of exploration.

Another favorite is from "17 People," when Toby realizes something's not right with Vice President John Hoynes and his motivations (I won't spoil it for anyone who may still want to watch the show). There's a recurring motif of him bouncing a rubber ball against the wall in his office as he thinks and ruminates and ponders, and he keeps going to Leo with his concerns but Leo keeps brushing him off....it's a wonderful opening sequence that builds and builds in tension, with the ball bouncing again and again until it leads into the Main Title music.

I hope that La-La Land Records will release a box set of the score of The West Wing!!

I always liked his score to the TV miniseries THE STAND; some lovely, evocative music there.

It's out of print, but can be found here and there.

Big fan of Snuffy, particularly his teen drama music like My So-Called Life and The Wonder Years.

They had planned a "West Wing" release years ago but ultimately canceled it. I don't remember why (if they ever said), but I had the feeling it was rights or some legal rigmarole. (I'm sure MV will quickly correct me and make me feel properly uninformed.)

What a pity!! Does anyone know why? I'm sure many people would have grabbed a copy!

Seems to be endemic with Snuffy... La-La Land had announced a Friday Night Lights score CD, and that fell through as well.

For those with the DVDs, the software and the wherewithal, I was able to rip the main title, a superb but too-short suite by Snuffy (one of the first season special features I believe) and the end title music. All together unfortunately they only make about 3 minutes of music, but as my own homemade mini-suite it's one I often play. Few tv shows of recent vintage can match the quality of the scoring on West Wing, and I'd gladly shell out for a disc or more of this wonderful music.

One of my favorite cues from the show was the climax of the Season 1 finale. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but those who have will know what I'm talking about. That sequence is one of my favorites on television.

My favorite cue is from the finale of Season 1, the climax. Those of you who have seen the series will know what I'm talking about, just trying to avoid spoilers for those who haven't seen it.

It's very possible that that's what I was thinking of.

Though I do believe there was a "West Wing" planned by somebody.

Unless I'm just losing my mind.

There's about that much music on this Walden CD (the final two tracks), or you can download them.

I prefer the OST versions from the DVD rip to Pete Anthony's somewhat less punchy-sounding renditions on that disk (judging from the short samples on Amazon, at any rate). Good stuff either way, though.
