So the amber version of the Jurassic Park LP sold out a few hours ago and already I counted ten copies for sale on ebay at, of course, astronomical prices. Obviously the feeding frenzy speculator mentality that infected the CD market a decade ago has shifted to vinyl.
Actually it makes no difference to me. As long as the music is the same on both versions it seems to me the only reason to buy the more limited edition on amber vinyl is to have what you regard as some kind of weird bragging rights at having scored a copy (unless, of course, you have some kind of fetish about the color amber). And I'm not sure who someone would be bragging to, since the market for soundtracks is pretty small to begin with and even smaller for soundtrack lovers who collect vinyl. I would think most people's reactions would be "You spent thirty-five dollars (or worse yet, $135 or $235) for a piece of yellow plastic?" I was just observing that having finally seen a change in the CD soundtrack market where there seemed to be more consideration given to people who actually wanted the music rather than those who saw it only as an investment, we are now getting a situation in the vinyl market where people are grabbing up copies just to immediately turn around and resell them. I'm guessing a lot of these people have no idea what the music even sounds like or who John Williams is, they just know it's a limited edition that sold out fast. The sad thing is that some of the copies on ebay already are getting multiple bids, so you can bet the next time Mondo or another label puts something like this out these guys will snap 'em up again. I'm just glad Mondo made a less limited edition available too, so those of us who are in it for the music can get a copy.
Nice thing about clear vinyl (with Amber coloring in this case) is that you can see flow patterns in the way the vinyl flowed from the center of the stamper to the edge.
