THURSDAY, JUNE 5 THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN---Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua, who worked together on TRAINING DAY and THE EQUALIZER, are in talks to reunite for MGM's long-gestating remake of the classic 1960 John Sturges Western. John Lee Hancock (THE BLIND SIDE, SAVING MR. BANKS) is rewriting the original script by Nic Pizzolatto (TRUE DETECTIVE). The original movie starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and Horst Buchholz. GAME OF THRONES---an eighth novel may be in the future which would extend the tv series beyond the original seven novels. George RR Martin's editor, Anna Groell, said, "Though seven is what we currently have under contract. I remember when he called me, years and years back, to confess that his little trilogy was... well... no longer a trilogy. He predicted four books. I said Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Then he said five books. I said Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Then he went to six. I said... Well, you get it. Finally, we were on the same page. Seven Books for Seven Kingdoms. Good. Only, as I recently learned while editing THE WORLD OF FIRE AND ICE there are really technically eight kingdoms, all having to do with who has annexed what when Aegon the Conqueror landed in Westeros. So, maybe eight books for Seven Kingdoms would be okay. Also, he has promised me that, when he finally wraps this great beast us, I can publish the five page letter outlining the bare bones of the 'trilogy'". Martin commented, "My plan is to finish in seven... But my original plan was to finish in three. I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story. My plan right now is still seven. But first I have to finish Book Six. Get back to me when I'm half-way through Book Seven and then maybe I'll tell you something more meaningful." STAR WARS---Josh Trank (CHRONICLE) will direct the second spin-off movie. Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA) will direct the first. Also, James Earl Jones was asked if he's returning for any of the new movies, "Oh no. I've got no illusions that I will or even hankerings to be in them, but I'm very proud to have been part of the original." SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR---after the MPAA rejecting the first poster of Eva Green "for nudity - curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.", Green commented, "I'm not actually naked on the poster. I find it a bit odd. It seems like it's all just publicity—a lot of noise for nothing. You have so many more violent things in the movie business and this is kind of soft. I'm not naked. It's suggested. I find it really sexy, actually. It’s kind of beautiful. But if it shocks people, I don't know what to do about it. I don't want to upset anybody. I don’t want to be seen as just the femme fatale or put into some silly box. I hope that people will have enough imagination." The banned poster is on top and the edited poster is on the bottom. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES---20th Century Fox released the sequel poster. TRUE DETECTIVE---Matthew McConaughey orginally said, "If HBO had wanted an option on me for a Season 2 or 3, I wouldn’t have done it." Recently, he said, "I liked TRUE DETECTIVE, the whole series and the experience of making it, so much that I'd be open to doing another one now." However, Season 2 will star a new cast with entirely new characters. SONS OF LIBERTY---History miniseries from Stephen David (THE WORLD WARS) described as, “From the Boston Tea Party to the Declaration of Independence, SONS OF LIBERTY will tell the rebellious story of America’s greatest fight for freedom" and how John Adams, Sam Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock and Joseph Warren helped create America. Ben Barnes (THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA), Henry Thomas (ET THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL) and Rafe Spell (PROMETHEUS) star. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON---Mark Ruffalo said about the Hulk in the sequel, "[My role's] even bigger than last time, and it's more complex and it has more layers and a bit more arc." SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN 2---the top three candidates to direct the sequel are Frank Darabont (THE WALKING DEAD, THE GREEN MILE), Gavin O'Connor (WARRIOR) and Andy Muschietti (MAMA). DIVERGENT---Naomi Watts will co-star in the next three movies in the franchise as Evelyn, leader of the Factionless. DADDY'S HOME---Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are in talks to star in this comedy movie about a stepfather's relationship with his children is jeopardized when their loser real father shows up. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST---Bill Condon (DREAMGIRLS) will direct the live-action movie from Walt Disney Pictures. MADDADDAM---HBO/Darren Aronofsky miniseries underway based on the sci fi novel trilogy.

Wait George R.R. Martin has an editor?! Mind blown. Sure doesn't seem like he has an editor. I wonder if he's going to live long enough to finish the dang thing.... And I thought I had challenges, simply reading it. Them....

The original movie starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and Horst Buchholz. The name you're looking for is Brad Dexter. Ha, that's the name they never remember, it's a good question in a movie quiz. I only remember seeing him in one other film, Von Ryan's Express.

CINEMASCOPE: Many years ago, I heard the following during a discussion about THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN---Dexter became a friend of Frank Sinatra when Dexter saved him from drowning while filming NONE BUT THE BRAVE (this probably led to Dexter being in Sinatra's VON RYAN'S EXPRESS). The friendship apparently ended when the two clashed during the filming of THE NAKED RUNNER. Yeah, another one I saw, None But The Brave. I've read a few bio's about Frank Sinatra who I find endlessly fascinating, & he was always falling out with people, even very old trusted friends would get the cold shoulder for some imagined slight, & would never get spoken to again. It's hard to find anyone who stayed the course.
