I somewhat agree with JJ's wish for secrecy, I think it makes the movie much more exciting and awesome if you do not know anything about it before it is released. Unfortunately those days of carefully managed studio marketing through Entertainment Tonight and such as in the 1980's are pretty much over, thanks to the permeation of smart phones in our world.
Everyone is a Mary Hart or John Tesh entertainment reporter now, including the entire cast and crew of every new movie being made.
I think they take security too far like hiding who the villain was in, "Into Darkness". On the other hand I don't want major plot details revealed. Then again am not such a geek boy that I care what hardware or characters are in a film. All I care is that its a good film.
Edit: Mary Hart was cute, but Leeza Gibbons was a babe. 
Yeah, they both still look very nice, Leeza certainly was, and very likable and a good reporter too.
O those days of ET being our source of information. I recall they had lots of Star Trek scoops in the day, in large part because they were a Paramount show, and John Tesh is a big Star Trek fan. For fluffy as it was, (still is I guess) it was never the slimy ugly thing this kind of reporting became later with TMZ and E and the like.
I agree on the whole mess JJ created with the Khan secret, it was a big blunder, largely because no one wanted the big reveal to be a villain we already had before. JJ admitted it was a PR mistake later.
Of course we can trust Orci and the new gang to mess up this next one very-very thoroughly.

Yep, ET was the place to go for all things entertainment back then. Was one of my favorite shows of the week. I know about TMZ but Ive never watched it. We have a society now that simply wants to put down and mock everyone. What someone does off the set is not my concern.

I remember back when ET first aired, their early days, they actually did more actual entertainment news stories as opposed to the celeb gossip that is the fashion now.
I even seem to remember Leonard Maltin doing a story on Varese Sarabande back then.
