Apart from the fact that his action set pieces are often on an epic scale what I really like about Cameron's action scenes is that they are not shot with that hideous shaky look like directors like Michael Bay employ and also very rarely ever rely upon the stupid quick-cutting technique that so often makes a modern day action sequence incomprehensible. Just a few examples of superb action directing by Cameron: Pretty much the last half hour of The Terminator The storm drain scene in T2 The escape from Cyberdyne with the T-1000 chasing Arnie and co (love that the T-1000 has three arms!) The sinking of Titanic The aerial battle between the RDA and the Na'vi in Avatar. Ripely rescues the grunts in the APC in Aliens And not forgetting True Lies (IMHO the best James Bond movie in the last 20 years or so) - Harry Tasker sliding down the snow on his back shooting baddies, or on horseback riding through a hotel, or hanging from a helicopter skid, or piloting a Harrier jump jet.    Posted:   Jun 1, 2014 - 5:36 PM     By:   nuts_score   (Member) And Mike_J enters from left field with his surprise choice! There are many filmmakers who are superb action directors, though they are nothing without the assistance of their stunt team and editors, or 2nd unit photogrpahy unit. There are many who simply blow George Miller, Gareth Evans, and James Cameron out of the water. As mentioned, Kurosawa really brought the Action film to the forefront of genre with his epics like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai. Let us not forget the supreme talents of John Frankenheimer, Sam Peckinpah, William Friedkin, Tony Scott, John McTiernan, and Michael Mann. Even Mel Gibson shows tremendous verisimilitude in his action scenes, of which his Apocalypto truly shines. Also consider the great Bond directors of the past, like Peter Hunt. Hunt brought his great knowledge of editing and pacing to create the truly thrilling and hard-hitting action sequences found in his 007 masterpiece On Her Majesty's Secret Service. And John Woo.
