Bear McCreary's score album for DaVinci's Demons Season 2 is released tomorrow, Tuesday May 27th on Amazon digitally.

Nearly 120 minutes of score for $9.99! eek

Loved his music for the first season, and the samples for the second season sound great, apparently this time around adding a noteable ethnic flute component, which is most welcome. Awesome to see several 10+ minute tracks, too; my favorite cue from the first season was the 11 minute "Easter Mass" track.

Much of the music is wonderful -- mixing beautiful vocals, period music and a lyrical, modern sensibility, but someone has GOT to shake some sense into ol' Bear. The album is two friggin' hours long, and wears out its welcome long, long before that. Geez. It's not like it's Wagner.

But yeah -- on an individual cue basis, there is loads of great stuff here, as there was on the first volume.

By the way, I'm following the show and I think it got much better in season 2. Looking forward to the season finale and if it's able to sustain its interest once we get past this 'book of leaves' business.

Wow Lokutus, that might be the most polite way you've ever expressed your disinterest in a download-only release! wink wink

It's not Wagner, but he has a devoted fanbase who really want every minute of it, so why tell them no? Also, more than any of his other series so far, Bear seems to regard (and to attempt to composer) his score for Da Vinci's Demons as one big classically-structured piece, and he wants to reflect the movement and growth of the themes away from the show. While the first release was a bit too long, there were only a very few cues (like the Vlad material) that needed to be snipped to make it feel the right length.

I still don't feel the music is strong or varied enough to warrant that kind of length -- at least not as far as a total listening experience is concerned. There is, however, a pretty great 50-minute program hiding in there. Somewhere. But who I am to say no if the fanbase wants it?

Yeah, I generally agree with you about album presentations. But I know that McCreary puts a lot of effort into presentation even of his lengthier releases and I think it shows. I have no trouble sitting through both discs of Human Target at once and, as I said, think Demons benefits a lot from just a little trimming.

It's funny, I'm a big McCreary fan, and purchased the season 1 release a few weeks ago, and I've listened to it three or four times. Yeah, it's a lot of music that can almost wear you out, but I'll say this: he sure doesn't skimp on the music.... seriously, I've got a dozen of his CD's, and he squeezes 78-79 minutes of music on to every CD. Considering how often on these boards people complain about not getting enough music on releases, I'll take more every time. Once I've identified my favorite music, I'll make a playlist of it!

It's very difficult to please everyone. It's probably best to err on the side of too much music, rather than too little. That way, those that prefer shorter albums can always do their own trimming. We pay about $10 for iTunes versions even for the old 35 minute Varese releases, so getting 2 hours' worth out of this is one hell of a deal.

I wonder how Bear / Sparks & Shadows manage to affordably put so much music out at such a price? I seem to recall LLL saying that Battlestar Season 4 cost them dearly owing to unexpected musician union fees for a double disk release.

It's only download-only for now. Bear has stated that much like other Sparks & Shadows releases, this will be followed up by a limited edition collector's release in CD format. Also, if the score to last season is any indicator, there will be more music on the CD than on the download. So I'm with him. At least we know our waiting will not be in vain.

Anyone else have a chance to evaluate this? I bought it and, while there's some lovely pieces in here, I don't think it's quite as enthralling nor justifies its runtime like the season 1 release did. Part of it is that a lot of it sounds pretty similar to the first season's score and with a great many cues, I'd be pretty hard pressed to tell you if they were from season 1 or season 2.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Chris.

I've only had a chance to run through it once, and I had other things going on, but my initial impression was almost the opposite: with fewer cues with greater runtimes, it felt to me a little smoother than Season 1, with no dud cues. I'm not sure it quite reaches the soaring heights Season 1 did a couple times, but it hasn't just felt like extraneous more-of-the-same either. I'll have to listen a few more times to get more specific.

Very nice. I'm excited to see where the music goes in season 2.

Anyone well-versed enough to do a which-track-appeared-in-which-episode breakdown yet?

Don't know for sure, but just from having read his blog here's a start:

Florence Under Siege - Episode 1
Transfusion - Episode 1 (McCreary's favorite cue of the episode)
Lucrezia and Leonardo - Episode 1?
Palle! Palle! Palle!
Liberta Populi
Illumination
Machu Picchu - Episode 5
The Test of Worthiness - Episode 6
Ima Kama - Episode 6
The Antidote - Episode 6 (which McCreary thinks "is possibly the strongest piece I composed for the entire season.")
The Voice in the Vault - Episode 7
The Undiscovered Land
Riario Confesses - Episode 8
Depth Perception
The Brazen Head - Episode 8
Bold and Fearless
The Ottoman Empire
In This Waking Life
The Fuse

Thanks! I can say for sure that "The Ottoman Empire" and "The Fuse" are from 2x10, the finale.

Too many cues that don't go anywhere. I enjoyed the Season 1 score but it doesn't seem like there is much new thematic material here. Plus once again we have some ridiculously long cues that don't have enough to justify the length. Really? 11 minutes in one track?

Yes, that's exactly what I was feeling. Long cues are fine, but a lot of the really long ones don't go anywhere. I thoroughly enjoyed the season 1 release and hearing Bear hype it as "most narratively ambitious and thematically layered music I have ever written" had me really looking forward to this one, but it just doesn't really deliver in the same way.

So any news on whether or not there will be a CD release?

Also, any good reprises of the main theme in this season?

Double post. Damn! I pride myself on rarely doing this! My mouse-clicking finger did a little Idle Hands maneuver and accidentally clicked twice on "post message".
