If you ever catch NO DOWN PAYMENT-57, it is a very good film , but it has a very depressing ending which I was a bit surprise of. I would definitely recommend it, if you come upon it.
Well, the whole film is hardly Utopian, what with all sorts of job problems for various characters, not to mention Tony Randall playing a mostly out-of-control alcoholic, a dramatic change from his usual light comedy casting. Then there are Joanne Woodward and Cameron Mitchell, as other-side-of-the-tracks folks landing in 50's suburbia. And the "racial issue" with Pat Hingle's conflict over assisting his Japanese co-worker, a WWII vet who fought for the U.S., to be allowed to buy a home in their development. Regarded as far more pungent and ahead of its time, NO DOWN PAYMENT was perhaps too pointed for 50's audiences, and may still be, since it has never received a video release. I saw it originally on the old NBC "Saturday Night at the Movies," or maybe one of there other similar programs, and I caught it again recently, in widescreen, on the Fox Channel. Also, this was director Martin Ritt's second film, and really deserves much more positive attention than it has so far received.

And she put a down payment on NO DOWN PAYMENT.
I actually didn't but someone close to me actually did. But i'm not supposed to know about it since it's a belated birthday gift. Because i have listened to many golden age scores in the past months and have planned to keep on catching up this summer too, Xmas and birthday gifts suddenly have been targeted more effectively. And because Harline has now turned into a very dear favorite of mine and the announcement took place a few days before my birthday, i know something delightful this way comes!
