Jon Burlingame just posted in Variety.com that all Morricone live concerts set for New York, Los Angeles and Mexico City are cancelled due to "serious health issues:"

Extremely predictable, and extremely regrettable. On all levels.

Hopefully this isn't a sign of something worse to come.

Then again, if anyone's earned a rest, it's him!

Sadly when you get up there in age a non life threatening ailment will cause damage to the body in other ways that will not be as severe for a young person. I hate to say it but the doc's may tell Ennio your live concerts for your sake should be over. We shall see.

I just really had a feeling the other day that this announcement was imminent.

I wish our dear Maestro comfort and rest.

This doesn't sound good ... Nonetheless, only a few weeks ago, a whole series of new concerts was announced for 2015.

The US concerts were the first to be moved to another date, after which the European concerts followed. So probably, cancellation is also hanging over the concert in Brussels for which I have tickets ...

Well, he's 85 and, I hate to say it, not immortal.

Most 85 year olds I know can barely walk, never mind give concerts.

Very sad. I had tickets for the Cologne Concert in Germany before they were postponed from April to June.

Looks like the June concert in Germany will be canceled as well, right?

'Serious health issues' sounds very foreboding. I hope he makes a full recovery. I enjoyed seeing him in concert in Belfast a few years ago.

I feel sorry for all the Americans who had looked forward to this. I guess I was very fortunate to see him at the Royal Albert Hall in 2010.

But most of all, I'm sorry for Morricone himself. As others have said, I hope this is just a measure to recovery, not a sign of retirement from the concert/composer world. Yes, he's 85, but that man has so much energy for his age that if ANYONE should be able to make a return at that age, it's him.

I hope he recovers well and completely. And I hope he takes his time. This man is astounding. All the best, Maestro!

That's sad but not at all surprising. I had hoped to see him in NYC in March. When that was rescheduled for June, I decided to get a refund on the tickets and take the trip anyway. At least it encouraged me to experience NYC for the first time, which was a great place to visit.

This reminds me of the time I flew from Toronto to London to see Goldsmith's 75th birthday concert at the Barbican only to find out a day before the show that he had cancelled and a guest conducter was brought in to replace him. Major bummer.

Thanks to saltarello from the EM forum:

http://www.gazzettadelsud.it/news/92640/Morricone-calls-off-future-concerts-indefinitely---update.html

'Legendary cinema composer Ennio Morricone called off indefinitely any future tours and concerts on Monday due to a herniated disc. "He's been afflicted for some months," said his lawyer Giorgio Assumma. "It's making conducting and long-distance travel impossible". Made famous for writing unforgettable scores for Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns in the 1960s and 70s, the 85-year-old will continue to compose music for cinema. His lawyer added that Morricone may be well enough for future concerts in his home city of Rome, "after his recovery, which is not expected to be swift".'

Thanks to rexlic from the fistfulofleone.com:

"The Ennio Morricone show scheduled for June 13 at Cushman & Wakefield Theater at Barclays Center has been cancelled due to health issues.

Morricone has been in recovery since March, when he suffered a back injury that forced the postponement of this concert from March to June. He was expected to make a fast recovery, however his doctors have now found further complications.

All online and phone credit card orders will be automatically refunded. Remaining refunds will be available at point of purchase.

We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see you at a future event at Barclays Center.

Sincerely,

Barclays Center"

A man at 85 and the recovery won't be swift. I think we know what that means. Let's hope though before he retires he gives us a few more scores, I think that is the best we can expect

I was most fortunate to see Ennio Morricone at his Radio City Music Hall concert in New York City in 2007. For my family and the very appreciative crowd, it was a musical triumph of film music! My wife and daughter were so impressed that they made me get tickets for the Los Angeles Hollywood Bowl concert as well, but that one was eventually cancelled. We still went out to Los Angeles, to visit my son, who lives there. Quite a few personalities in the soundtrack industry attended the "consolation dinner" most generously sponsored by Bruce Kimmel. What was the Chinese restaurant's name...something like a take off of Genghis Khan, or something like that. At that time, I thought those two occasions would probably be my only opportunity to see Morricone live. And only one of them was.

Now fast forward to the "Morricone Farewell Tour" that was just cancelled. The program seemed pretty much the same as the 2007 program, with a few newer selections. To go or not to go. New York City would be easy. Brooklyn is quite an involved trip from Central New Jersey. I dillydallied and procrastinated long enough until the Ticketmaster website finally said that the concert was sold out.

Time went by and I reconsidered and reconsidered. EBAY had a number of sellers. One fellow, in Staten Island, had an unresolveable work travel conflict and was selling his tickets not too much over cost. I wound up getting them. Then Morricone hurt his back and the concert was postponed to June. Okay, I had wiggle room in my schedule. It was going to be my last time to see him, so I didn't seek a refund.

Now everything's cancelled. As a physician, I certainly understand the serious implications for an 85-year-old. You just don't bounce back from that kind of injury and the necessary surgery like you might years ago. I certainly hope for a full recovery for Ennio. God bless him as he recovers. But I am thinking that that 2007 concert in New York City was and will be my one opportunity to see him.

Genghis Cohen, on Fairfax?
