This was probably the first Shirley Temple (and Alice Faye) movie I ever saw - in a movie theater on a rerelease way back when- so I have a special affection for it. It still is charming - and has a great cast including Gloria Stuart, Jane Darwell, Michael Whalen and Sara Haden.
It has some wonderful songs especially Alice Faye's "When I'm With You"(also sung by her soon to be husband , Tony Martin!) and "But Definitely" plus the novelty song "You Gotta Eat Your Spinach, Baby" by Faye, Temple + Jack Haley - plus the big song+ dance number with all three stars - "Military Man".
Shirley also sings "Oh My Goodness" - a catchy hit song to her Dutch, German, Japanese and Black Dolls - unfortunately it contains contains the following lyric -
"Pickaninny , when it comes time to scold you -
I just hold you in my arms and and say --
oh - hide-de- hi-de hay- Oh my goodness!"
Of all her Fox films, this is the only one never released in the US on dvd. Does anyone know why? Politically incorrect? I watched a colorized vhs but it sure needs a remastering on dvd or BR --

The licensing fees are higher than the others perhaps because of the songs. The reason it (like so many other films) exists elsewhere is usually because licensing fees are cheaper in other Countries whose releases remain exclusive to those regions. That's why there are many titles appearing in the U.K. and Australia (like the one you're after from Fox on region 2 and 4 respectively) that companies in the U.S. don't want to gamble on.
Another cost saving factor offered by license holders are limited runs which have, like many soundtrack labels, started to attract companies like Twilight Time. The negative effect for consumers (again like the soundtracks) is that once these limited releases are sold out they go for a small fortune on E-bay.
Like I've said before to countless movie buffs: Get as versatile a player as you can: Multi-region, Blu-Ray, DVD etc. Then you can take advantage of deals like these:
