Wel, it certainly was the perfect film to watch on Halloween!!!!!!
I loved it.
This is how you make a giant monster movie. The pictorial sense was tremendous. Ingenious angles, lighting and staging. Notice that almost all the shots of the monsters were pov.
The action scenes went on for the right length, the sound design phenomenal, the music good too.
The script had just the right balance of seriousness and fun. I think the Watanabe scenes were meant to be be half-serious and slightly tongue-in cheek.

BTW I saw Godzilla with a veteran visual effects supervisor and a veteran production illustrator, both of whom loved it. I definitely disagree with the idea that there's anything sub-par about the effects in the film--I thought they were magnificent and in general only equaled by a few shots in Pacific Rim. Godzilla did have a lot of action set at night, but the action was stately enough and the camera held long enough that I always felt I had a very clear view of the action and the creatures, unlike in Pacific Rim where between the constant rainfall, super-fast action and an underwater climax, I felt like I was seeing a lot of strategies to make rendering easier so we could never quite focus on the creatures and robots.
Yes. Nice to see an action film with good composition and editing. It has become a rare experience.
There was plenty of daytime action, unlike the disappointing RIM.

I really did like that there was a sense of scale and orientation to the monster scenes, without the too closely framed action and quick cutting we usually get.
I thought this film had the potential to be able to tie the monster battle stuff with the philosophical element for the first time ever, in that all of the creatures could be tied together within the bounds of an anti-nuclear theme. Instead, all of the nuclear stuff is more treated like a plot point rather than anything any of the characters really struggle with.

The "nukes will destroy us" if we don't destroy nukes," is treated more allegorically than explicitly
but its clearly in the script>
The scene at the Us NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP is pretty powerful stuff!
