Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

HIDDEN MOON

Music Composed by
Luis Bacalov
(Il Postino, Sea Of Dreams)

After a mysterious, beautiful Latin woman named Miranda (Ana Serradilla) makes a dramatic appearance at the funeral of a man, shocking his affluent Southern California family, Victor (Wes Bentley), the man's son, heads to Mexico to find out the truth about the nature of her relationship with his dead father. He finds Miranda in the city of Guanajuato living with another man, Tobias (Osvaldo de León). When Victor confronts Miranda, she denies meeting his father and says they will never hear from her again. If Miranda is telling the truth, what exactly was she doing at Victor's father's funeral? Who is the man that she is living with now? Their confrontation is the beginning of a chain of events where the protagonists will have to solve the dilemma that happens when true love comes twice at the same time.

Academy Award-winning composer Luis Bacalov (Il Postino) provides a heartwarming romantic score.

HIDDEN?MOON?will begin showing in U.S. theatres in April.

This sounds exquisite and absolutely lovely! For me this will certainly be one of the best new scores this year.

I'm lsitening to the album now and it's really quite lovely. I'm not as familiar with Luis's music as I should be. What else should I look into, folks?

Bacalov has scored a lot of romantic dramas in the last 20-25 years. Not so during the 60s and 70s for which he may be much more popular among the average collector of Italian soundtracks.
So if you are looking for scores which might be stylistically similar to HIDDEN MOON then in any case go for SEA OF DREAMS which a few years ago was also released by Varese.
The finest among his romantic scores from the last 25 years in my opinion are: LA MASCHERA, MARCINELLE, LA TREGUA, LES ENFANTS DU SIÈCLE and POLISH WEDDING. Also ILONA ARRIVA CON LA PIOGGIA, THE LOVE LETTER, CARAVAGGIO, IL CIELO CADE or IL CONSIGLIO D'EGITO can be recommended. And I suppose that you might certainly be already familiar with his Oscar-winning score for IL POSTINO.
All of these are beautiful and sumptuous romantic scores where Bacalov has found his own style with his typical melodic ornamentations - particular in his writing for the piano - whereas his older genre scores from the 60s/70s were much more influenced by Morricone.
It might be not easy to find CDs for all the mentioned scores anymore nowadays as CAM has released a few of them and they don't exist anymore as a soundtrack CD label.
Also LES ENFANTS DU SIÈCLE might be a rare French CD nowadays. LA MASCHERA by the way was only available on LP, not on CD in 1989.

My favorite even though only about half of the album is score and the rest is jazzy source music is Coup de Foudre, a CD released by Quartet a while back. It eventually sold out but I wondered where the excitement was because the oboe playing on it is so divine.

Love Letter and Polish Wedding are also quite lovely. The Postman is a nice score once you cut out the poetry tracks that take up about half of the album. There are a lot of Bacalov scores that I would call quirky Italian scores because in some way the low budget comes through.
